A PEEK INTO PERU

Here in March, my team and I have been placed in Lima, Peru at Iglesia Macedonia! We will be spending time with Pablo Soto and Belen Salazar our ministry hosts and with Belen’s father’s church Iglesia Macedonia. The first two weeks we will be working with their daughter church doing the work of evangelism, including working with the various ministries of the church with kids, social programs, etc. We will also be spending another week in the jungle helping to prepare Belen and Pablo for moving there permanently, finish constructing missionary base, and help plant more seeds.

Belen’s father David arrived at Iglesia Macedonia 15 years ago, and their vision was the reach their zone of Lima with the Gospel. There are many distinct ministries with kids, youth, and adults, and their ministry has expanded to mobilize the church to missions. One of the missions has been to the jungle, a village called Chuquibambilla several hours from Lima.

Base Misionera Antioquia began in 2015 when God gave Belen and Pablo a vision to plant a church in this village. They began to build a base with the vision of reaching the Nomatsiguenga indigenous people group, with the hope of creating a training center for mobilizing the Nomatsiguenga to reach their communities. They also have provided social services such as medical services, education, and vocational workshops. Belen and Pablo completed their studies at a university in Lima to learn to translate the Bible into the indigenous language.

NOMATSIGUENGA FACTS

  • “Nomatsiguenga” are an ethnic group located in Pangoa district, Satip province in Junin throughout the central rainforest of Peru. Around 12,000 people live in 17 recognized native communities.
  • In the 80’s and ’90s, the Nomatsiguenga were victims of violent attacks carried out by terrorist groups like MRTA and the Shining Path.
  • From the beginning, they have dedicated themselves to agriculture for their own subsistence, the products they mostly sell are coffee and cocoa.
  • Nomatsiguenga men are considered to be very hard working and collaborative with their wives. They have a good command of their language and easily orientate themselves in the forest. Women act responsibly and know how to look after their families.
  • The Nomatsiguenga’s most outstanding characteristic is that they focus on spending time with their families and on being hospitable, which becomes obvious when someone is invited into their homes.
  • The Nomatsiguenga have an animist belief and stories that express their ways of looking at the world, nature, and other beings. This is where we see the biggest necessity of presenting the love of Jesus to them because the message of salvation has not yet arrived at their communities.

ANTIOQUIA

The missionary base is called ANTIOQUIA.
One of the Nomatsiguenga communities is Chuquibambilla with about 600 inhabitants. Chuquibambilla is where God has called Pablo, Belen, and David, etc.

The base got the name from the bible. Antioquia is Spanish for Antioch which was the base where the apostle Paul was entrusted to carry out the missionary work in Acts 13:1-3. In the same way, this team believes that God will raise and empower native leaders in the Antioquia missionary base so that they can share the message of the Good News. The missionary base shall be the center of recruiting and preparation for those people who are called to share his love.

Vision

That the word of God will be spread in the Chuquibambilla community and that God will raise a strong and consolidated leadership to reach the Nomatsiguenga ethnic group.

Mission

To preach the message of salvation integrally to the Nomatsiguenga ethnic group of the Central Peruvian rainforest, staring in the Chuquibambilla community.

Strategy

  • Evangelism
To preach the word of God in the Chuquibambilla community and thus allow that His word shall reach more Nomatsiguenga communities.
  • Training and Discipleship
To consolidate and strengthen the work of evangelism through a discipleship school based on the model that our Lord Jesus gave us. In this way, God will raise native missionaries to ensure that through them the preaching of the word will be effective.
  • Social Support
To express God’s love and mercy in specific and tangible ways by observing the communities needs and motivating them to develop personally and as a community.

In my upcoming blogs, I will be sharing more of what ministry looked like as my team partners with Pablo, Belen, and David. Thanks for you patience, prayers, and support! I love you all so much! Bendiciones!
