Sometimes… things just don’t go as planned.
On our off day, we had planned to go to Old Town Quito exploring and relaxing all day. Maybe go to a market.. A couple shops.. An easy day.
Well…
We get to Old Town Quito & visit this INCREDIBLE church.
Then we get directions from locals on where the market is. Turns out the market was less than 10 vendors and on the side of a very busy road. Expectations broken, HA!
Then we go to a Texas Chicken to eat lunch and in walks a woman, M, who speaks fluent English. So we begin to get to talking to her, buy her a meal & just trying to share the gospel with her. M is crying overwhelmed by the fact we all loved her enough to talk!
Long story short, M takes us to a bus station to catch a bus to the Equator/Center of the Earth that was about an hour away. (fun fact: this ‘1 hour’ turns into 3 hours!) The buses are packed and we begin to board – Emilie, Katy, Lauren and I are the only ones to get on, like the bus doors shut Lauren inside! Ah! So we begin to CRACK UP! I mean like drawing attention to ourselves dying laughing. We end up meeting Nicole, Lynna, Carly and M at the next bus stop, still laughing.
M leaves us to go to work, so now we are all on our own the rest of the way. We eventually get on what we think is the correct bus – wasn’t but took us to the same bus station, thankfully. On our way there, we are cruising down the road and the bus STOPS GOING! Dead in the middle of the road the bus shuts off and we sit for about 10 minutes until it starts working again. Again, cracking up at what is happening.
Eventually, we made it to the Equator to only find out it was the false Equator and the real one was a 500m walk and was free! So we get to walking and come upon this Indian Museum looking place (which ends up being the Equator – just hidden). Through Google translate and broken Spanish, we end up paying $4 for a tour of the place. Even though we solely wanted pictures of the line. The tour ends up being super interesting and fun & we got this cute picture 🙂
Somehow, we found our way back to the original bus station we began with! We quickly order two Ubers (forever thankful for Nicole & Lauren’s data <3) so we split up and leave. Nicole’s Uber leaves about 10 minutes after Lauren’s so we fully expect them to get home before us.
Well… they didn’t…
The Uber got lost! And to add on top… Lauren’s phone was at 1%, driver was about out of gas and they were about 50 minutes away in the middle of the mountain!
By the Grace of God, they made it home about 20 minutes later!
Overall, it was a day that makes you ask ‘wait, what even happened?’
Sometimes… you just have to laugh.
xo,
Ky
