Yeasterday while I was out prayer walking my team was about to head back home when a lady on the side of the street jumped up and started waving at my friends and i. We waved back and proceeded to keep walking when all of a sudden my team leader looked at me and said “should we talk to them?” I then without hesitation or thought and said “YES!” So we walked back over to them and started to talk to them. You could immediately tell they were drunk and were probably high. It was hard to tell what they were saying at first since they spoke Spanish, they were all talking over each other, and were slurring there words. One man actually got up in all the confusion and got two plastic bottles full of vodka and brought them back to were we were all sitting. They passed it around as we talked. But as we began talking more and more Holy Spirit moved! They started talking one by one. Telling us what lead them to alcohol. And how they lost everything because of it. Their friends, family, incomes, and basically all there lives. As they talked about there loss and the brokenness they were in, my heart felt heavy and broken. And just a longing for hope and life. I could feel the sorrow that they were going through. My eyes swelled up with tears as we began telling them what God could do for them and wanted to do for them.
We began telling them how God can give them new life. And how he calls them sons and daughters even though they feel ashamed and not worth it. He sees them and cares for them so deeply and that he is hurting right now because they are hurting. They all began to cry (there were 4 men and one women). We started praying over them one by one. And after we were finished One of the men who got the vodka while we were talking actually dumped out the alcohol he had just gotten. And then they started to bless us and thank us for loving them and pointing them to Christ! They told us that they hope to see us again when they are clean and with there family’s again pursuing the Lord. It was such a cool experience!
What’s so cool about this though is that sometimes I think we just dismiss people because they are drunk and think oh they may not remember, they won’t want to talk to us, or they just want money. But DONT discredit what God can do! Sometimes those people are even more willing to talk because they are in such a broken state and just need encouragement.
Another thing I got to experience is that after talking to them my leader felt like we should buy them food. So we went back and asked them what they would like. They all said sandwiches. My team leader then walked to a restaurant and then proceeded to buy one of the most expensive meals on it. We were all confused on why he didn’t get the cheapest meal. He then told us that God would only give us the very best and so he wants to show them another small part of God’s love for them. Wow! I had never thought of it like that! God is just so good! And I’m so thankful he keep teaching me and keeps giving me opportunities.
Oh and IM IN MY LAST COUNTRY!!! I will Be home in 43 days!
