Last month I got to stay in the awesome country of Nicaragua. Needless to say my time there was busy, enjoyable, and memorable. I miss the faces, the places, and the services we were able to help out with. As a tribute to my time there, here are few fun facts from me and some of my teammates about Nicaragua. There are also pictures to help you get an idea of what life was like.

  1. Nica’s are very warm and friendly people!
  2. It is very warm and humid during the rainy season.
  3. Hammocks are an amazing thing to have while in Nicaragua. If you don’t have one, ask a squadmate.
  4. Beans and Rice. Want a good breakfast? Beans and rice. What’s for lunch? Beans and rice. What’s for dinner? You guessed it. Beans and rice.
  5. Sunsets. They are beautiful.
  6. The landscape in the rainy season is beautiful and lush!
  7. When greeting and leaving always give a hug and a kiss on the cheek, even if you have never met the person before.
  8. Volcanoes, are real. They are big. And they exist here.
  9. The beach is a beauty and has warm water!
  10. Nica time is a real thing: (meaning they are tardy a lot)
  11. Juice is big here. And there is a juice here called Tamerand that if you drink to much, well… let’s just say you and bathroom are gonna spend some time together.
  12. Mosquitoes come in swarms to give you lots of love!
  13. There are a lot of dogs. A LOT of dogs ??
  14. The taxi drivers and bus drivers are quite confident in their driving abilities…even if you aren’t in theirs.
  15. The Moringa plant- which has amazing healing properties- grows here.
  16. The WiFi hunt in Granada is a real thing for Racers.
  17. Swimming in a lagoon is a beautiful and relaxing thing to do. I highly recommend.
  18. Riding in the bed of a pick up truck through neighborhoods with 10 other people and singing, “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, is totally awesome.
  19. Scorpions…be careful with these guys. They may say hello to you on your bunk bed, your bag, or a closet. They are quick to ‘strike’ up a conversation.
  20. The stars are beautiful here.
  21. Don’t flush toilet paper down the toilet. Just don’t.
  22. Cold outdoor showers are AMAZING! Just be prepared to have a few friends join you: like scorpions, spiders and the occasional frog. Yes. There was a frog once in my shower.
  23. “Twany” is slang for cool in Nicaraguan.
  24. It gets really warm here. So… drink that water, drink it!
  25. Trash it’s everywhere. Get used to it! But please, pick it up too!
  26. The locals like to play basketball, baseball, volleyball, kickball and football.
  27. How many people can fit in a 5-seater taxi? Um…I think this picture gives you an idea:
  28. Bzzzzz. Swat. Bzzzzz. Swat. Bzzzz. Swat. At meal times, not only do you get to eat, but you get an arm workout too! It’s totally a normal thing to have flies invite themselves, their friends, and their family members to your chow time. Have fun!
  29. Nicaraguan weddings are exciting… and a bit different. You get to see two people in love make everlasting vows to each other, but you also see kids running around, the ice cream man jingling his bell, and the casualness of it all.
  30. Washing your clothes by hand is a lot more relaxing than it sounds. 🙂
  31. Sunrises are stunning.

Well, these are just a few fun facts about my time in Nicaragua! Stay tuned for more on Nicaragua in my next post.

Hasta luego!
