So our first day in Granada, Nicaragua I was on the porch with Brendan and we saw a fire in the distance, but we didn’t think anything by it because people would burn trash. Then about 10 to 15 minutes later we saw people running towards the flames with tools in hand. We then realized what was happening, there was a fire heading towards the farm. So we ran after them to help anyway we could. After cutting away brush to try to keep it from spreading we had to cut down some tree limbs. We were able to get a hose out there and just try to put the fire out. We eventually got it to go out and everything was fine but for awhile I truly thought that it was not going to be able to be put out. Something I’m beginning to realize is that God shows me stuff through nature a lot. I’ve heard the phrase “Burn with an unquenchable fire” but never really took it to heart or understood what that really meant. What’s it like to have an unquenchable fire? A fire so big that it literally cannot be put out… EVER. Like… what? How is that possible? Without God it wouldn’t be possible, but with God we can have that fire in us. In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit came down in tongues of fire. And then when we are saved we have that same Holy Spirit inside of us. So we can have that quenchable fire inside of us that is the Holy Spirit and a desire for more of God. Do you know that song “this little light of mine”? Why do we say that? Who wants a tiny light? Not me. I want a light that shines super bright, reflecting the life of Jesus. That’s what all of us need to have: a light that shines so bright that it cannot be hidden, put out, or even dampened. A light that can be seen from a distance, just like that fire that we saw from the other side of the farm. We need to shine so bright that people see and know that we are different because we are. And we are called to do it in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age”. And what is a better way to make disciples than to be a light, that is obviously not of this world, so that people notice that we are different? So that poses us with the question. Do we want to be a lighthouse or a phone flash light? Do we want to be a crazy wild fire or a candle? Do we want to be fully sold and on fire for God, or do we want to live a life that’s just enough to get by? This is what we need to figure out, and we need to decide and act on it. Because there are people that need Jesus and he’s called us to be that light that is on fire for him.
