I’m on month 3 of the World Race in Jaco, Costa Rica. This journey has been filled with joy, growth, moments of laughter that have made my stomach hurt, friends who are continually pouring into my life and squad-mates pushing me to be all God made me to be. I have been thriving in my time in Costa Rica because I have a special connection to Costa Rica. 2 years ago I came to Costa Rica on a short term missions trip and after interacting with some people in Costa Rica who had done the World Race I felt called to go on the World Race.
This month we have been partnering with a ministry called Oceans Edge. We have been doing a variety of tasks this month including childcare for missionary families, manual labor on our ministry site, doing a carnival in a low income area, and teaching surf lessons to locals in the area.
Here is a glimpse into my life as a World Racer month 3:
Definition of a good shower in the United States verses on the World Race:
U.S- A hot shower lasting an indefinite amount of time
World Race- Cold water is available and lasts the entire length of my 10 minute shower without shutting off
Definition of clean clothes in the U.S verses World Race
U.S- Pulling clothes out of a washing machine
World Race- Hand washing your clothes to smell a little less awful than they did that morning (don’t worry I plan on splurging at the end of the month and taking my clothes to a laundromat for $10 a load)
Definition of a full car in the U.S verses World Race
U.S- Every seat in the car is occupied
World Race- Every seat is occupied and then however many people can fit on other peoples laps and still be able to shut the door
Definition of community in the U.S verses World Race
U.S- People who get together and talk about life generally on a surface level
World Race- Your squad sees ALL sides of you whether you like it or not; good, bad, ugly, dripping in sweat, or covered in dirt. I had no idea that people could know so much about my life after knowing me only 2 months.
Definition of a “nice” bathroom in the U.S verses World Race
U.S- Immaculately clean bathroom
World Race-A bathroom with toilet paper, a working sink, and soap to wash your hands. When I get to Africa I am well aware that my definition of a “nice” bathroom will change to a bathroom that flushes.
We leave for Panama on St Patrick’s day one week from today. I’m praying for continued amazing relationships with locals, pursuing intentional relationships with my squad mates, and I would continue to have amazing intimacy with the Lord.
