Tamarindo is a type of tree in Nicaragua that produces little pee looking pods. Inside is seeds that are covered with the part of the tamarindo that you can eat. It tastes really yummy if you make juice out of it. Reminds me almost of a sour date.
At reap Granada they have started a ministry of empowering and employing women to make jewelry using the tamarindo seeds.
The process is long but so so worth it.
The ministry hires about 40 women to harvest the fruit from the trees that covers the property, then the women have a whole process where they crack and peel the fruit to go sell at the market. Then they dry out the seeds in order to make jewelry with them.
Katlyn the amazing women who has started all of it has only been able to employ 6 women long term for the meantime to actually make the jewelry since it just started this year so it is still so small.
About twice a week these women show up at the farm to work. They sit down at a table and work triedalisley all morning.
Some of these pictures of the jewelry is from Paige Kat and myself sitting down with them one morning to help give them some new ideas for jewelry.
There product is now online and they do indeed ship to the states!
Here are the names of the women that make the jewelry along with a little bit about who they are.
Roxane she is in charge and head of the other women. She looks so much like Jesus. She leads the women with a childlike faith and curiosity.
Jessica is always glowing, not sure how she does it. Her smile shows her love for the lord!
Katherine she is strong and determined. Demonstrates so much of the lord character
Katherine #2 wow this sweet girl has the wildest most joyful spirit.
Judith caries a gentle delicate presence. She also has a mindset to serve and love others extravagantly which inspires me daily.
Arland is not only one of the hardest workers I have ever seen but she also is brave and ready for what the world throws at her because she knows the lord is standing right next to her.
