Every time I asked certain people about the world race, they would always tell me
“go in with no expectations”
“go in with a heart ready to be challenged”
”be ready for the best time of your life”
However, here’s a list of 25 things they don’t tell you(these are things I’ve experienced and fellow squad mates have experienced):
-
There is a delicacy called BALUT, and it is literally a duck embryo, which you eat. Here’s a link so you can see what it looks like. https://goo.gl/images/STkUXm
-
Your team may be involved in an intense prank war, where the girls always win.
-
You may go kayaking into the waves as a typhoon heads towards the island you’re staying on.
-
There’s a possibility you end up playing baseball using a tennis ball as the ball and bamboo as the bat.
-
You could end up staying in an Air BnB which is inside World Race budget, and you have a view overlooking the entire city.
-
You can also end up fitting 14 people in that very same two bedroom Air BnB and you’re perfectly comfortable.
-
You could end up taking a 18 hour sleeper train, where the seats fold down into a bed.
-
Your feet may get stuck in two feet of mud, where you have to take your shoes off in order to lift your feet out of the mud.
-
Abby: no one told me they would peer pressure me to eat a scorpion.
-
Abby: no one told me they would throw bugs at me, because they know I’m deathly afraid of them.
-
There could be a guy from Germany who your teammate meets one day, you have no idea who he is, and you meet him the next day, and end up spending two whole days with him talking about Jesus.
-
You could hammock in a bungalow.
-
You literally get to stand on the back of an elephant.
-
You get to climb up the middle of a waterfall.
-
There are rats the size of small dogs.
-
In other countries, you are a celebrity aka “Justin Bieber” or “Ed Sheeran”
-
Shiloh: you could potentially fly to another country for an adventure weekend.
-
You can go snorkeling, and literally hang onto a rope attached to the boat and said boat skims across the water, pulling you along with it.
-
You get to experience the Festival of Lights in thailand, which is the lantern festival, similar to what you see in the movie tangled.
-
If you don’t spend the currency that you have in that country, you will have a lot of change weighing down your backpack unless you throw it away.
-
It could look like you being accompanied by a small squad of soldiers as you walk to a village.
-
The world race could look like riding on top of a songthaew all the way to a river.
-
Could look like playing Pokémon Go in other countries and catching the ones you can’t catch in the states. (Don’t judge me)
-
You could make friends who literally change your life and become family.
And last but not least:
-
No one tells you that it will feel normal doing all of this.
Thank you guys so much for taking the time to read through this. I am currently in Malaysia, and this month is ATL month, which means ask the Lord. We don’t have a set ministry, but are praying and seeking God’s heart in where and who He wants us to minister to. Update: I reached my fundraising deadline of 13,000! Freaking Jesus! With that being said, I still have 5,000 more to raise by January 31st of next year! Please consider donating, but please also consider sharing this post on social media with your friends, family, coworkers. So grateful for all of you!
