Food is a universal symbol of fellowship and community. People gather around the table to eat, talk, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Food is a basic necessity, yet it can provide so much more than just nutrients in your body.
One of the biggest ways I have felt love and community in Chile is from gathering around the table. My team has grown closer by cooking meals together and intentionally eating together. We have laughed and cried and experienced so much life around one table.
Families from the church have invited us into their homes for meals. They have extended so much kindness and generosity by inviting us into their lives and around their table.
The way the Chileans have been lavishing us with cookies, bread, and local, homemade dishes displays a beautiful picture of God’s unconditional love. They give without expectation to receive, just as Christ does. My team came to serve these people, yet they have served us in so many ways that we do not deserve. I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by people who give so freely and love so deeply.
So as they say in Chile… guatita llena, corazón contento (full stomach, happy heart)!!!
