As I started ATL month I had a lot of people tell me that they couldn’t wait to hear the cool stories of how God would move in this month. I couldn’t wait to have stories of the miraculous and crazy ways that God would move in and around us. Basically, I put a lot of pressure on wanting to see God move in big ways. As I started the month, I had grand ideas of wanting to volunteer at a hospital or help in an orphanage…I wanted to DO something tangible. Impact this part of the world in some way. Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t bad things to do by any means, but I don’t believe that’s what God had planned for my team and I this month.
So instead of asking God, “what should I do?” my team and I started asking, “God, what is enough for today?” I’m not going to lie, this was hard for me. I am very much so a person who has a to-do list and needs to check tangible things off my list in order to feel productive. But God is a relational God to the core. He will do things that seem so illogical to us, just to show us His goodness and love. He would leave the ninety-nine for just one (Luke 15:1-7). He comes for YOU. For me. Success in the Kingdom of God oftentimes looks very different from that of which our American culture tells us is success. So this month I had to toss my to-do list mentality and I traded it in for more intimacy with the Lord as I asked Him what was enough.
What did I learn? My teammate Regan showed me this quote by Morgan Harper Nichols that I think sums our month up pretty well: “the person you are becoming is sometimes more important than what you are doing.” Yes, we built relationships with some locals. We also had some cool religious talks with a couple of our new Muslim friends. You can even check out this blog (
https://kaylakincaid.theworldrace.org/post/the-guy-who-keeps-pursuing-me) to read about some of the cool ways God showed up in my life this past month. But the biggest lesson I learned this month was growing in intimacy with God and with my teammates. I learned to sit still with the Lord and abide in Him longer. God showed me areas I need to continue to grow in and He revealed more of Himself to me. I learned more about my teammates and got to pray for them more deeply. And you know what? God counts that as success. I’m learning to be okay with getting less done if that means I get to spend a little more time with Him. It doesn’t mean I’m lazy – it’s me making room for more of Him and less of me. And I know He will use it.
I think we often want things right away. Our society is instantaneous but God’s Kingdom is not. Sometimes it takes months or years to see the fruit of the Lord. Just like a tree can take years to bear fruit or how crops take months to grow before we can harvest. It is sometimes the same with God. I think God was planting seeds in my team and I this past month that He will more fully use later. So no, I don’t have a ton of crazy, wild or adventurous stories of God moving. But that certainly does not mean that God wasn’t working in and around us all month long.
