So today I was putting together chords and lyrics for songs our band will be playing at the early service at Otterbein UMC next Sunday. We’re doing 3 songs, and we just picked songs off of the top of our heads that we knew people knew and liked. One of the songs we will be playing is “The Power of Your Love”. I always liked this song, but today I looked at the lyrics and God WRECKED me! If you don’t know the song, here are the lyrics:
Lord, I come to You
Let my heart be changed, renewed
Flowing from the grace that I found in You
Lord, I’ve come to know the weaknesses I see in me
will be stripped away by the power of Your love
Hold me close, let Your love surround me
Bring me near, draw me to Your side
And as I wait, I’ll rise up like an eagle
And I will soar with You, Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
Lord, unveil my eyes, let me see You face to face
The knowledge of Your love as you live in me
Lord, renew my mind as Your will unfolds in my life
In living everyday by the power of Your love
In the past couple days I’ve had conversations with many different people. One of those people was Teresa McMillan. I loved getting to reconnect with her, and this song reminded me of something she said at PSL a few weeks ago. She said that if people ask her what they can be praying for her, she says “Just pray that I stay close to Him”. This is a prayer I’ve adopted and started praying for myself; that I stay close to Jesus. This song is such a beautiful visualization of what being close to Jesus looks like. As we draw closer to Him, He will change and renew our hearts and our minds. He will strip away our weaknesses and unveil the knowledge of His will in our lives. That’s a powerful prayer, and one that God will faithfully fulfill every time. His deepest desire is to be close to His children and lavish His love upon them, and for us to be His hands and feet in showing that love to others, too.
Another thing this song reminded me of is a conversation I just had with another squad mate. We’re both transitioning home after the World Race and we were just talking about what was going on at home. Just hearing her talk about what God has been teaching her and how she is seeking God, I could feel the power of what God was going to do through her as she was speaking. That in this season of waiting, He is preparing her for something HUGE! So reading the lyric that says “And as I wait, I’ll rise up like an eagle”. The Lord lifts us up AS WE WAIT! As we draw near to Him and seek to be obedient to His will, HE IS LIFTING US UP! I know I feel like I’m in a season of waiting, and it’s such an encouraging promise to know that as I draw near to God’s side, even as I wait, I’ll rise up like and eagle. This is why we can trust God in any season. He never stops working!!
