I have actually gotten this question quite a few times in the last couple months. And just by asking that question, you are already started.
For anyone who watches The Office, have you seen the episode where Michael has a GPS and it’s telling him to bear right up ahead. And Michael isn’t actually looking at the GPS and Dwight is screaming at him to bear right up ahead, but Michael thinks it’s saying to make a sharp right and turns straight into a lake.
Yea, that’s how my life used to be.
I thought I knew what I was doing because I’m smart right? I was 20 years old I know all the ups and downs to life. I know how men should treat me, and if they don’t treat me that way they will change right? I know that the rule to life is to make a lot of money and have a good job and a decent family then you die right? I know that in order to be happy all you need is a fun and hype set of friends and a 6 pack right? I know that the only thing that truly matters in a relationship is our sex life right? Because everything will follow after that. What about my future, all I need is a decently big house and a 4-door Jeep Wrangler and I will be happy right?
As God is shouting…literally screaming, HANNAH (insert your name) PLEASE PLEASE I BEG YOU HANNAH BEAR RIGHT UP FRONT, DON’T MAKE AN IMMEDIATE RIGHT PLEASE LISTEN TO ME KEEP GOING STRAIGHT I LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND I DON’T WANT YOU TO GO DOWN THAT PATH BECAUSE IT WILL HURT YOU PLEASE HANNAH KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU!
What does 20 year old Hannah do? She makes a sharp right turn because I think I know what I’m doing. Then what happens to 20 year old Hannah? My brand new car that I saved all my money for is under water, all my friends are jumping out of the car trying to save themselves, and I’m drowning.
I’m here to help you realize that there’s a hand that can pull you out of the water and guide you back to the road because of how much He loves you.
Do you actually know that God wants you to have the desires of your heart? If your dream is to be an engineer, He wants you to be an engineer because you love it and He loves what you love. Do you actually realize that? He wants you to have a man or a woman in your life that treats you like a king and a queen. HE WANTS THAT FOR YOU!
BUT IF YOU KEEP MAKING SHARP TURNS WHEN HE NEEDS YOU TO STAY STRAIGHT, YOU ARE GOING TO END UP DROWNING! It’s happened in my life time and time again.
So, how do you start having a relationship with God when shit happens and you need His guidance?
Just like you start having a relationship with a person you just met. Talk:)
Hey God, I’m Hannah and I’m drowning. I know I don’t know you all that well, but it seems like you know what you’re doing. And I need your help and guidance. I know that even though your ways don’t make sense sometimes, I want to follow you just to see what your way is like instead of my own. Will you reveal your love and guidance to me?
So how, then, do you get to know someone who doesn’t really talk back to you most of the time? You read the Bible:) yea, it doesn’t sound fun. And a conversation sounds a lot easier, but reading the Bible and genuinely understanding the character of God teaches us how we should be too.
In order to keep a friendship going, you have to talk to that person everyday. Because a friendship isn’t demanding an answer and then never speaking to that person again. It’s gaining trust with each other and learning and asking questions about that person.
Also, please surround yourself with people who are in love with Jesus. It’s one of the most important things to do because if you don’t have people constantly pushing you and holding you accountable, it’s a lot more difficult to do it on your own. Please get involved with people who are seeking after the Lord with their whole heart!
Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t get an immediate answer. Don’t give up. Because He promises to answer you.

Seek Him and you will find Him. Ask Him questions and He will answer. Knock on the door and He will open it.
