Day 294 on the Word Race (I’m not actually counting but a teammate just said it so I thought I’d share). We spent today packing and hanging out with our host’s kids. Tomorrow (very early) we leave to meet up with the rest of the squad to head on an 18+ hour bus ride to Uganda. I’ve been asked by my manager to post what we’ve been doing because apparently the masses have been telling her they want that. So here’s another little update from the past month.
We spent our first two weeks helping at a kindergarten in the mornings. The second week of that we were hand writing the kids’ exam papers. In the afternoons we would trek to the church and paint or move sand and rocks. Once school was out, we would go to the church in the mornings and give encouraging words/devotionals to the women who attended a sewing school there. We would often do work around the church after that as well. In the evenings, we would sometimes play cards or watch movies with our host’s five kids. On Saturday nights, 2-3 people on my team would speak on a Christian radio broadcast. We were told it reaches around one million people in Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. Talk about a cool opportunity. Last Saturday, I spoke on the greatness of God’s grace and was able to share the gospel. It’s crazy how incredibly weighty something like that feels as you prepare to speak. A million people, many of whom could be hearing the gospel for the first and only time, many believers facing persecution and a difficult life who are desperate for encouragement- it’s not a light thing. But God showed up and each week gave whichever of my teammates were speaking the strength and the words to say. It was awesome to see Him do that.
I really enjoy Rwanda but am super excited to be heading somewhere new. We, team Alawei, will be in Lira with team Phoenix next month. We’d all appreciate if you prayed for unity in the individual teams and focus on the present as we only have 30 days until we land in the States (eyyyy Boston!) and 26 day until final debrief. So basically with all the exciting things upcoming, it’s a challenge to stay in the present. Anyway, hope you’re all doing well, feel free to reach out!
