Christmas Eve 2018: at 12am Guatemala began the light show of a life time. As I ran outside yelling “Merry Christmas” I was amazed at the booming and sparkling of fireworks surrounding me. What better a way to proclaim “joy to the world, our Lord has come!” than shooting off masses of fireworks? For a solid 30 minutes my heart was overwhelmed with childlike joy. We ran around outside screaming, doing cartwheels, and counting the different places around us that we could see fireworks.

New Year’s Eve 2018/2019: for almost 2 hours, 7 of my squad mates and I danced around outside screaming the lyrics to early 2000s songs. After we had almost lost our voices, and our bodies were exhausted, we laid down under the stars and sang the slower songs together. At 11:55 we grabbed our sparkling grape juice and our fireworks and headed to the driveway to celebrate.

3…2…1… HAPPY NEW YEAR! Just like Christmas we stood in the field admiring the fireworks that surrounded us on all sides. This time we lit some fire works of our own. Some were great and some were duds, but when you buy fireworks for $6-$12 that’s what you get!

It’s hard not being home around the holidays, but this year’s holidays were unlike any other I have experienced, or will every experience again.

Many bendiciones,

Gracie J
