As I read through the gospels, Jesus keeps highlighting the word faith to me. And not gonna lie, I’m was very confused about it because faith is what my entire life and relationship with Jesus is built on. It’s the most basic thing and the cornerstone of all my beliefs. So why does Jesus keep bringing it up?
Matthew 17: 14-21
“At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said “Lord have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into water. So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.
Jesus said, “you faithless and corrupt! How long must I be with you! How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”
The Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and he left him. From that moment on the boy was well.
Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “why couldn’t we cast our that demon!”
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, “move from here to there,” and it would move, “Nothing would be impossible.”
After reading this story, I realized that Jesus is telling me that I don’t have enough faith, just like his disciples! But that’s ok, because that is why Jesus came! He is the author, completer, and perfector of our faith. It makes total sense that our human faith isn’t enough, because we as humans aren’t enough on our own to save ourselves. We need Jesus! Because we naturally can’t have enough faith on our own it creates a natural dependency on the Lord to constantly ask him for more faith!
I began realizing that a lot of my struggled come from not having enough faith in Jesus! When I lack faith in the truth of my identity in Christ I begin to compare myself to others, when I lack faith in him being faithful I doubt. It all leads back to faith and the fact that we have to always be asking for more of it!
