- Jeffrey’s Bay has wind! I’m serious! One day early in our stay we thought it was really windy! But Luctor told us that no, this is just a “baby wind.” Sure enough, he was right. The last week the wind blew and it was a DADDY wind, I’d say! I had to lean into it to get anywhere, if that tells you anything.
- God wanted my work to be done only for Him. That sounds like I should have learned that a long time ago, right? Well, I’m forgetful, and God had to remind me to be sanding those floors and hammering those nails because I’m doing it for Him, not just because I really like working for Uncle Ian.
- Rooibos tea is the best! I drank a lot of it, and I’m so glad Botswana has it too!
- It’s important to invest in the people around you, no matter how long you might actually have them in your life. Wendy (our mom away from home) cooked our dinners every evening and she did it with so much love! Roger, Wendy, and Candace poured so much into us as teams; they made us a part of their lives.
- Fifth graders the world over are pretty much the same. Athembile Ukho is a young man that I got to help tutor who loved to eat and was amazing at math! Some afternoons he would come in and look sad, but I got him to smile at least a bit before he left.
- I can actually enjoy running (walking) a 5K. Amy is a great running partner!
- It’s very easy to become invested in your work, especially if you really enjoy it. The log home was special to me in more ways than one, and one of the reasons was definitely that I just loved working with wood.
- Early mornings were the norm. I woke up consistently at 5:30 every morning no matter if the alarm went off or not. Mostly I think it was because the sun rises so early and also because once my eyes are open, they kind of stay open.
- I learned that synchronized dancing looks hard and is harder. But it’s also lots of fun! I really just enjoyed discovering that I CAN dance.
10. Global Challenge has an amazing faith-filled history. I was challenged so many times by their walk of faith. I also found it so intriguing that World Race and Global Challenge did a year’s journey together before going into separate countries and becoming their own ministries.
11. Ask the Lord and He WILL answer! Something I’m challenging myself in this next month is to be asking God the hard questions and to be patient and know He will answer me.
