What does actually being on the World Race look like?
First of all, there isn’t ever a set, standard, day. Days can involve anything from children’s ministry to manual labor to house visits; and that’s only a few of the possibilities. Currently though, I’m finishing up this month where we’ve been working just north of Lira, Uganda.
It’s been a tough month but an amazing one. We’ve worked a variety of jobs all around our compound and community, and to help you get a better idea of what it looks like (and since I’m a schedule guy), here’s a layout of what an average day looks like for me/our team here on the Race:
6:05am – Wake up! (It’s still pitch black at this time)
6:15am – Workout
6:45am – Jesus Time (Currently reading in Daniel)
7:15am – Worship/prayer time (combined between my team and the other team here as well)
7:30am – Breakfast! (Usually bananas, a hard-boiled egg, and some form of bread – if you don’t know what chapatti is, look it up and make some immediately!)
8:00am – Work (Could be manual labor, serving in the community, or teaching P.E. at the school)
10-10:30am – Break time (more for Ugandans as this is when they eat their breakfast)
1:00pm – Lunch time!! (some combo of rice, potatoes, cassava [a root like a hard potato], pumpkin, greens, cabbage, beans, fruit, and avocado)
2:00pm – Back to work
4-5:00pm – Work finishes sometime during this hour depending on your outreach with downtime till dinner
6:00pm – Dinner!!! (pretty similar to lunch)
6:45pm – Team time (time for our team to come together and relax, get work done, grow closer, and point out positive actions from the day as well as call each other higher if needed
7:30pm – Downtime for the rest of the night. Options could be reading, playing games, looking at the stars which are sooooo bright here, hanging out with each other or the kids that live here at our compound (they’re so incredible – their prayers and worship could move mountains)
9:00pm – Bedtime! (Usually pretty exhausted by this point and it’s also, again, pitch black – the sun lasts about 7am-7pm)
Nighttime – Rain (It rains almost every night. The loudest thunder I’ve ever heard has been this month – it literally shook our hut over and over again.)
So, that’s a pretty average day here in Uganda. Hope this helps to give you somewhat of a picture of what life looks like on the Race.
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.” Eph. 3:20-21
God bless!
-Ben
