Month 1/Philippines –
City – Cainta (14 miles from the airport but takes 2 hours to drive because of #somuchtraffic)
Team – Tigress
Dates – October 11th – November 6th
Host/Ministry – Kids International Ministry
Living Conditions – So incredible. I had a queen size bed to myself. Hot showers (WHAT?!), A SWIMMING POOL!!, delicious food
Scripture I read through – Genesis, 1 & 2 Peter
Language – Tagalog but a lot of people spoke some English
Highlights – an overnight trip to Mindoro with Eva, adventure day to Taal Volcano, swimming in the Ocean, playing with the toddlers at the children’s home, leading devotionals at the children’s home, community swim time with the street kids, the view from eagle’s nest, serving with Vessels of Joy
Lowlights – Passing out week 1 (we can laugh about it now), feeling unsatisfied in regards to the work we were doing, communication issues
Friends made – Jamie & Dave, Jerica (her picture is below), Kate, all of our hosts, drivers & kitchen staff at Kids International Ministry
Lesson Learned – community living is hard and building new relationships is harder but worth the fight and energy to create safe space.
What kind of ministry we did – playing with street kids, playing with toddlers at the children’s home, leading devotionals at the children’s home, construction (helping lay foundation for what will one day be a high school and soccer field), painting, going on community feedings and leading Bible studies for women in the community or telling bible stories to the kids, helping at the pregnancy clinic, and more!
Stories to ask me about –
The time we did a community feeding in a cemetery on all saints day.
The time we did a community feeding in Tondo & smoky mountain (a community built on trash)

My Friend Jerica I met at the Smoky Mountain feeding

team tigress and most of team vessels of joy at the smoky mountain feeding.
this community had so much joy despite living among the worst poverty I’ve ever seen

worship on top of eagles nest (a scenic overlook of Manila near our ministry)

our team on our adventure day to Taal Volcano (a lake inside a volcano, inside a lake!)

team tigress, vessels of joy and our squad leader Alex on our beach day!

Scripture of the day:
“Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by His death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death. It’s obvious, of course, that he didn’t go to all this trouble for angels. It was for people like us, children of Abraham. That’s why he had to enter into every detail of human life. Then, when he came before God as high priest to get rid of the people’s sins, he would have already experienced it all himself – all the pain, all the testing – and would be able to help where help was needed.”
Hebrews 2:14-18 (MSG)
Song of the week: I belong to you
