Training camp is preparation for World Race. For future racers here are some random tips & fyi:

  • be prepared to live outside for 10 days, ie: bucket showers, porter potties, eating all meals outside,
  • there was hot/warm water at my training camp so if you want coffee bring some instant coffee.  Also, chocolate covered expresso or coffee beans are great.
  • You will be able to work out. I worked out 7 of the 10 days & prob could’ve worked out all 10 days if I really wanted to. If you prioritize it, there is time to make it happen.
  • Bring head phones, possibly noise canceling headphones if you like alone time & space, you’re around people pretty much 24/7,
  • only bring clothes that fit the dress code, I brought a lot of shorts that I couldn’t wear bc they were too short. Nike/Adidas/Reebok running shorts are usually too short.
  • Phone charger, I forgot mine. They ask that you don’t be on your phone much so you’re not distracted, but if you want to check your phone at all, bring a charger so you don’t have to ask & borrow one.

I did a lot of research prior to buying gear and read a ton of World Race blogs. Here’s my World Race Packing list:

World Race Packing List

This is the gear I ended up with after lots of research:

Trekking and Day Packs: North face all the way bc of the chiropractic certification for back support. I got a 70L trekking pack. I have a smaller trekking pack & have run/sprinted across the airport with it to make a flight, super comfortable in general and not hot.

Tent: Sierra designs meteor 2 (weights ~4lbs, plenty of space inside with pockets on the side & places to hang Carabiners on top) it monsooned the last night of TC. I had my tent vent open. I didn’t get wet or any of my things.

Sleeping bag: Sierra designs zissou 35/650 dridown.

Sleeping bag liner: Sea to Summit insect shield

Thermarest pillow (it’s ok, it packs down well)

Sleeping pad: neoair camper XL with a mini pump. It is a little crinkly with movement but super comfortable, even for side sleepers. One morning I legit woke up and thought I was sleeping in my bed at home.

Here are some pics & videos from TC:
