“Our spiritual ear will never be sensitive to His voice if we have a personal agenda to which we are already committed. God leads and speaks to the humble, who surrender their plans and want to do His will. With an open heaven and a surrendered will, we will hear God’s voice in our heart”
Jim Cymbala
Lord, I seek You. I want to turn away from the distractions of today’s to-dos, from the world’s confusion, from misplaced identities, from the fantasies of my own heart, and instead seek quietness in Your presence. Lord reveal Yourself to me, let me see Your will in this situation and let me trace Your fingertips, let this time be defined and outlined by Your voice.
Lord I can’t do this on my own, or with my own directions.
I know You are here, I know You are with me. I have faith, full determined, overwhelming faith in You. Your promise says: The person who has my commands and keeps them is the one who really loves me and whoever really loves me will be loved by my Father and I too will love him and will reveal myself to him – John 14:21
So to see God → we must obey God.
Radically obey Him. Obey Him on the spot. With the big and the small, with the crazy and the mundane. With full complete trust, no safety net, no backup plan or “just in case” scenario.
We must also remember that as humans we can’t just sit and magically obey Him. Passively listening to the Lord might work once, or every once in a while. But not always. Passive listening might cause us to miss His voice. We might miss His guidance if we try to treat obeying God as a convenience exercise or compartment in our life we check on periodically. Without obeying, we will completely miss the opportunities that God has set up for us.
So we must plan to obey.
You and I have to willingly and actively seek His guidance, and to have a soul that is committed, with daily steps, to hearing His voice.
And my friend, I have found that He makes His voice loud and clear to those who are willing and seeking to hear.
We must understand our complete dependence in God and wrap our heart around the fear of not having His guidance. The secret counsel of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He reveals His covenant to them – Psalm 25:14
First, figure out what stops you from hearing God.
What creates a barrier between you and His voice. What is stopping you from seeing Him chase after you. Is it fear? Pride? Impatience? Laziness? Desire to control? Distractions and priorities? Concerns that you might hear Him wrong? Feelings of unworthiness?
Whatever it is, leave it behind. It is a thief of joy and freedom. It is the first stumbling block to hearing from our Papa. These things have taken enough from us already and it’s time to abandon them and exchange them for hearing from God instead.
Obedience to God, in my opinion, unlocks the blessings that God intended us to have and the purpose He created us to fill. Obedience creates an open door to hear from God, it leaves things in His hands and sees His hands in everything. “I can do nothing on my own, I judge only as I hear, and my judgement is just because I do not seek my own will but the will of Him who sent me – John 5:30
So I say we surrender, and we submit to God and lose ourself – lets position ourself to a posture of obedience and get ready for God to be everywhere we look. I will instruct you and teach you in the way in which you should go, I will counsel you with my eye upon YOU- Psalm 32:8
So we must plan to pursue Him and to intentionally strategize to be obedient… Because if left to our natural reactions, we will live in a constant state of denial and resistance to God’s way.
In contrary we must take a position in which we can hear what God wants us to do next, because I have learned that small steps in obedience to God lead to big moves and destinations intentionally outlined for YOU. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me – Revelations 3:20
So, create a routine, a structured plan, seek and desire first a relationship with our God, stop for 5 seconds before a decision (no matter how small) and ask for His guidance. Don’t leave Jesus’ opinion and will up in the air, there is too much at stake for it. “Turn your eyes to Jesus and the things of this world will grow strangely dim in the light of His face”
Lord, you know me best, I am loved by You, You know my heart. Please fill my heart with Your words, Your desires and Your love. Take it all Lord, and saturate me with more of You. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life – Psalm 27:4
