Picture: Some of the case workers and counselors that I got to work with this month. It was such a blessing to spend time with them.
Living and working at a refugee camp looks vastly different than I imagined. For starters, it is significantly larger than I thought. We live in a huge camp that in any direction you look you’d see tents. And that’s just the camp for the workers employed by various humanitarian organizations. There are over 30 organizations in this camp. I work alongside an organization focuses on girls ages 18 and under. All are either child mothers or adolescents out of school due to various reasons, such as war. This organization does so much!
They have counselors and case workers who go out to the field. They offer vocational training such as bakery classes, business training, and tailoring. They provide health and sex education. They teach them about good hygiene and distribute hygiene products monthly. They also offer regular bible studies and teach the girls to lead their own.
A couple days a week I stay in the office to help with paper work. Other days I am blessed with opportunities to go out in the field with a counselor or case worker. When in the field, I do home visits, help with distributions, and co-lead bible studies.
A Day in the Field:
Because the refugee camp is so large, the driver spent about an hour driving around the settlements dropping us off. I get dropped off last with my favorite counselor. We set off to do 6 home visits.
Today, I met a 16 year old girl who fled Sudan about 4 months ago and just gave birth to her second child. My heart breaks and I cant’t contain my tears as I squeeze the hands of her little brother who is vastly malnourished. I say a silent prayer. Thank you heavenly Father for breaking my heart for what breaks yours. Thank you for reminding me what makes my heart beat. I’ve seen many cases of malnourished children throughout the last eleven months, but never this severe. There is absolutely no joy in the eyes of this little guy.
After a bit of counselling and data in our hands we head off to our next home visit. This one involved a domestic violence case that resulted in accidentally burning down their home.
This is just a small fragment of what my days look like during ministry this month. Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
FUNDRAISING/PRAYER REQUEST:
I’m only $1,162 away from being fully funded. So so close! Please pray about an amount, whether small or big it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
