When I was young, my parents put me in a Sunday night program called AWANA. AWANA stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. This program teaches children the word of God from kindergarten to senior of high school. Every lesson there were verses to memorize. I did that from the time I came to the US until I graduated from high school. From that I memorized over 800 verses. As time passes on, I have forgotten a lot of it, but still a verse will pop out of my mouth every now and then. That’s when I actually know and recite the scripture. It was truly something I will never forget. It wasn’t just memorizing them, it brought me closer to God. The knowledge of scripture, hidden in my heart goes a long way. The Word of God is useful in fighting against doubts, rejecting temptation, and to sharing the Gospel with non- believers.
I know I will never lose my faith in Christ, I often question my faith as a Christian. As a follower for Christ, we all have doubts. For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword and piercing as for as division of soul and spirit, and it’s able to judge the thought and intention of the heart.(Hebrew 4:12) When in doubt, spend times in the scripture. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.(Romans 8:38-39) The scripture proves He is alive and nothing in all creation can separate your relationship from God.
God saved us from sin, that didn’t mean we won’t sin again or that we can sin much as our heart desires. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?(Romans 6:1-2) Temptation will alway be there, one of my leaders pointed me to same verses that encouraged me and lead me away from sinning. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful Joshua 1:8. Your Word I have treasure in my heart so I may not sin against you.(Psalms 119:11) Let the scripture be your foundation so that you may not be tempted so easily.
It is very convenient when we memorize the scripture in our heart because it can be very useful to encourage one another. We do not always have a Bible by our side. By planting those verse in your head, it is easy to share the gospel. All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every Good word.(2 Timothy 3:16-17) The Word of God is useful for building each other up and lead them to Christ.
We have the Word of the God of all creation in our hands, we often neglect it. We tend to leave it around the house, collecting dust. The Word is living and active, do not hide it in the house or put on a bookshelf. Share it with everyone.. Read it and obey what is in it so we may live in righteousness.
