Have you ever had your worth reduced to that of a single churro?

Well, let me tell you. Hearing from another human that I am worth trading for a stick of fried dough surfaced emotions that encouraged me to shine light on an issue that can so often be shoved in the dark. (Also one I’m realllll passionate about).

Being the punchline of a joke. Treated like a piece of meat that is only good to look at, not listen to. Feeling disrespected by not only the wandering eyes but also by the so loosely thought out words that bring nothing but death. Hold your breath. Keep walking. Ignore it.

Our last ministry in Ecuador was helping build a wall to protect girls ages 9-17 who have been rescued from sex trafficking. Since my arrival in Peru, I have had much more time to process the emotional and physical strain from our last ministry. The reality is, these young girls were robbed of a childhood. They were robbed of their innocence. Their worth was based solely on how much money they could make for their abusers- not how their hugs bring instant comfort. Not how their laughs float in the air like wind chimes. Not how their eyes sparkle when sitting criss cross in the grass making flower crowns. These girls have so much love to offer this broken world. They are truly stronger than anyone I have ever met. They have endured through more than most people will in a lifetime.

God calls them His beloved children.

The cat calling and inappropriate offers that I have experienced during my short time in South America is just the smallest glimpse into the lives these girls were being forced into. Women are more than their anatomy. Women are not just eye candy. Women can and will break the predetermined stereotype that they are only capable of accomplishing menial tasks. I want every girl to know they can do ANYTHING they set their minds to. There were days when we were building the wall and I wanted nothing more than to opt-out, but then God reminded me that although the work was hard, the purpose behind it was protecting young woman that deserve a safe place, one where they can act their age and truly rest!!!!! & He reminded me that I’m a mother freakin’ woman!!!!

In the Bible, Deborah is a prime example of stepping outside of the social norm. She was the ONLY woman who served as a judge in Israel and one of few women in Scripture who rose to positions of leadership. In the Book of Judges God spoke through Deborah many times emphasizing the importance that it is Gods power that matters, not the instrument in which He uses. Man or women.

I am thankful that I was raised by my graceful mother who taught me that it is okay to make mistakes, but they do not define you. I am thankful for my sisters who always taught me to be independent and work hard. I am thankful for my father who raised us girls never to feel inferior and to stand up for what is right, even if it is not the most popular opinion. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to walk along side six other woman these next six-ish months. They empower, love, and serve boldly with a joyful heart.

Most of all, I am thankful for a God who created me just the way I am, woman and all.

“It’s not her shape, her face, or her hair that makes her beautiful. It is neither the smoothness of her skin, the boldness when she stands, or the perseverance in her heart. It is the condition of her heart, the gratitude she lives by, and her love for God that expresses true beauty.” Pierre Alex Jeanty
