“Savannah, you need to get some rest. Your body needs rest.” I hear it pretty regularly from family, friends, and coworkers. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m being stubborn when I grin, nod, and with a monotone voice say… I know. I simply can’t. I don’t have time. There’s too much to do. Of course I would love to slow down and relax, but it’s just not on the schedule.
Do you feel like this too? Exhausted? Do any of these reasons sound familiar?
- “Where does the time go?”—time management, procrastination, distractions
- “Sure, I can do that.”—trying to do too much, the inability to say NO.
- “Oh, I’ll just do it myself.”—too often thinking it is easier to do it yourself, feeling there is a right way to do a task (i.e. MY way).
Well this past week, I had the flu.
Boy, if you’ve ever had the flu, you know you have no choice than to stop. Your body just aches to move. You’re too exhausted to do anything.
I went from going 100 mph to …ehh… red light. Ha! It took me getting THE FLU to slow down.
When I look at Jesus’ schedule in the Gospels, I notice that Jesus rarely got in a hurry. I don’t see Jesus running through the desert yelling for the disciples to hurry up! He got the mission accomplished without the whirlwind. Jesus prayed often. “Often” is the word used to describe the prayer life of Jesus. Think about it. The Son of the Living God prayed often. And I’m trying to “fit in” a prayer life?
It doesn’t have to be this way.
God is with us. It’s our choice on whether we slow down and truly see Him in everything. Think about any four year old you’ve ever met. What do they notice? Everything… Opening your eyes to the ladybugs, cracks in the sidewalk, clouds, and many other treasures. Were all those things there before? Yes, but it took us slowing down to notice. God is indeed more obvious when we slow down.
Reflect every day, throughout the day, Where do I see God?

Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
