We had a chance to take a week off from ministry and take some time to rest after our first month of ministry. It was a great time to really remember why I am here. I had the chance to get to know some of my squad mates more during this week and was able to teach people how to surf after i picked it up. I tried one meter long pizza, chia seed yogurt, and shark. When on a budget, you try some fun things. Shark was actually really good, i recommend it! We were able to get close to Room2Board staff and went out to eat with a few, some surfed with us, and we made friends for life. Thank you staff of Room2Board. Thank you for free coffee from 5-11 am and amazing staff.
We got back from our debrief mid afternoon on Monday and everyone was really tired. I took an hour nap for once and it was awesome at the time but it felt like i was ran over by a truck when i got up. During the evening i went and got some coffee and played some cards with the squad. Tuesday we have our first day back to ministry after a week off. I didnt even unpack my backpack from debrief because in the morning we were going to a kids camp for a week. We had no idea what we were able to get into. 3:30am came really fast after going to bed around 12:30pm. I tried rolling over multiple times to get more sleep but jesus had another idea for me. So i got up and made some breakfast and some coffee. The Holy Spirit gave me this crazy energetic rush at 3:30. I got into the word and i became extremely excited for the camp. This camp was not just a change in ministry for a week, it was a week with just the guys, it was a week where we can serve kids. It was the same excitement that i got on Mondays back home for Young Life. So i ended up going back to bed at 4:50 and at 5:00 eight different toned alarms all go off. So i dont think it was really worth going back to bed but i got the guys going as they wanted to roll back over to go back to bed. They got packed up and made breakfast. We had to catch an uber to San Jose which we got stuck in traffic so it was an hour uber ride. Then we meet up with a man from the camp, La Montaña Christian Camp, at a bus station. From here we caught a bus to another bus station and then to the camp. Well total a 4.5 hour travel day. The camp is tucked into the back woods in the mountains of Costa Rica and it is beautiful!
The past few days, we have been building a gravel path up a mountain that is about a mile and a half long. The conditions are very muddy and very slick and very steap. We have been using wheelbarrows to haul gravel up the mountain. We have been cleaning the cabins before a group of kids come Saturday and Sunday. It is the off season so it’s mostly preparation for the summer months. We have been cleaning glass on sketchy 20 foot scaffolding. And today we ran through our activities that we will be doing with the kids when they get here. Including lifeguarding at the lake, gym games, rock wall, and a mud obstacle course that we had to run through as a team.
Over all, I have been on a spiritual high right now serving this camp. And getting excited to minister to the kids to come Saturday.
We had two powerful worship with some staff and tonight we went into town (about 45 minuets away) to minister to a homeless shelter. What a humbling experience.
Sometimes 3:30 coffee is the best coffee even if the coffee is a few days old!
