It’s been a jammed 6 weeks here in Africa. We spent the entire month of October in South Africa at a ministry called Impact Africa; this organization is devoted to the people of South Africa who live in squatter camps specifically in the city of Johannesburg.
Squatter camps are communities populated by people from all over the southern African countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, and Mozambique. They come to South Africa in hopes to find work to send money back to their homes. The result is giant pockets of poverty scattered all over the country of South Africa. There is virtually no middle class in the country.
Impact Africa’s vision is to bring Jesus, the only real hope, to the people of South Africa. They go into squatter camps everyday to bring the good news of Jesus and to disciple new believers. They also run two schools in two different camps for children in their early years of education. Impact Africa is also in the final stages of having their own children’s home for abandoned children.
This month my team and I were equipped and empowered to bring the gospel everywhere we go. We were poured into and encouraged to be interruptible in our daily lives. Being active participants in the Kingdom of God is not an option; rather, it is the reality for a follower of Christ. It is our life. “Be fruitful and multiply” was our first command. This is echoed by the words of Jesus in the Great Commission at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. He just tells us to “go,” and we ask, “where?”
And now I find myself in the bush of Zimbabwe with only the men of our squad planting churches and bringing Jesus to the villages of Binga. I stepped out of my role as Team Leader for the Wild Geese and am now on a team of all men (the Kingsmen) led by Christian. We are seeing so much growth already within ourselves, and we are excited to continue to grow closers as brothers and impact the region of Binga with the living hope of the world, Jesus Christ.
So far we’ve gone hunting for giant camel spiders, Levi led 36 people to Christ with one message, I slaughtered a goat that we’ve been eating on for days now, and we’re currently making bows to go hunting for guineas to eat on thanksgiving. The Lord has also been revealing a lot to me about stepping into my identity as a man of God. One week in and we’re already being blown away. What’s next, Holy Spirit?
P.S. Mom and Dad, I’m fine. We have absolutely no wifi, we’re 6 hours away from the nearest city, and our phones don’t work. We’re loving it. I love you, though.
