Last Thursday afternoon my team was pulled in for a meeting with all of our leadership. Super intimidating. However, it turns out that upon entering Cambodia, we had gotten a visa that was only one month long. Therefore, we would be making a quick trip to Thailand this weekend, so that we could stay our full three months here in Cambodia. The plan was to stay there for one night and then catch a bus back to Cambodia the next morning. When we left for Thailand we actually had no idea what we were going to do, or what our weekend was going to look like.
When we arrived in Thailand on Saturday night it was about 11pm, so everything was closed. The next morning, I woke up fully expecting to jump on a bus and be back in Cambodia that night. However, the Lord had a different plan for us.
There weren’t any busses heading out so we had to stay another night in Thailand, leaving us the entire day to explore and embrace Thai culture. We called the day ‘Walk and Eat.” As we walked the streets and the market, we tried so many different foods and stopped in a couple quaint little shops. I chose the song, ‘Just Kids’ by Brave Holiday, for our Thailand video because of the irony that it holds. We actually had no idea where we were going, but the Lord knew and had a plan for us.
Prior to my race I always had to have a plan. Timeliness is something that I held closely to. I expected everything to run smoothly, and according to plan. When I got to Asia I received a harsh reality check that that is not the case. The Lord has been teaching me a lot about patience and taking each moment as it comes, not as I expect it to be. This was a weekend where I got to put that into practice. We got to eat all kinds of incredible food, Zumba in the park, see a quaint little book store, an art studio, watch an incredible sunset and go searching for a skyline view of the city. All completely unplanned. I’m so glad that things didn’t go according to plan. I’m so excited to finally learn how to walk without fear of the future – to take each moment in, just as it comes. This relates so heavily to my daily life in Cambodia as well. We like to use the phrase, expect the unexpected. A huge storm, the electricity going out, little kids joining us for dinner, or finding a nearly 8 inch centipede in the toilet. None of these are things that can be planned for, yet they have all happened within the last week. When I don’t have the ability to plan, and don’t know where I am going, the Lord does. I get to rest in that. Rest in the assurance that my heavenly father is going to lead the way and that eternally, I do know where I am going.
