I thought that it wouldn’t be this hard, but it is.
Thanksgiving for me is a little different this year as I am no longer working in the retail business, but instead I am in a coffee shop (once again) in Honduras surrounded by a bunch of my squadmates as we wait to walk together to our hotel that we are staying for The Awakening event.
So far all day today I have been thinking about what thanksgiving is like back home. My dad waking up early to start preping the turkey before making breakfast of harvey girl pancakes while the Detroit thanksgiving parade and Macy’s thanksgiving day parades are on the tv in the background, and throughout the day my dad will continue to prepare all the sides that go with a traditional American thanksgiving dinner (at least at my house).
Turkey
Stuffing
Cranberry sauce
Gravy
Onion Pudding
Mashed potatoes
Mashed sweet potatoes
Bashed ‘Nips (Mashed Parsnips)
Layered jello
Green bean cassorole
Rolls
Pumpkin Pie/Apple pie
Wow does all that sound really good right about now! Just thinking about all that makes me feel emotional
I have always dreamed of the day when I could finally sit down, and have a decent thanksgiving meal with my parents instead of worrying about getting to work on time. I thought that this year was my chance, but God had other plans for me this Thanksgiving, and in a weird way I am a bit grateful for that.
Sure I miss my parents & other loved ones back home, but in a way I get to spend thanksgiving with a new family- my P squad family. I love each one of them, and each one of them also brings a unique aspect to the family, and for that I am very grateful for each and every one of my squadmates.
So what am I thankful for back home that I miss while being on the World Race:
Being able to see my Best Friend on a weekly basis at church
Hot water to shower with every night
Drinking water straight from the tap
Easy access to reliable transportation
Washing machine/dryer (cause washing your clothes by hand is a pain in the butt)
Being able to flush toilet paper down the toilet
A soft matteress
Wider range of food options for meals & being able to eat beef more often
Having my own room & not having to share a bathroom
Strong wifi
Sleeping in in the mornings
Watching tv
Being able to go out and walk to places by myself
I couldn’t be more grateful about where I am this Thanksgiving as I know that God has been & will continue to teach me things that I never knew that I could be taught. God is pushing me past my limits in order for me to grow in my faith, and to put my full trust in him & his plan.
(For the record, honestly I do not miss working in retail during this time of the year, and am actually glad to not be in the enviroment anymore.)
Praying for all of my friends who are working in retail today & tomorrow!
In case you are wondering what my thanksgiving meal is gonna look like on a World Race budget:
Chicken
Mashed potatoes
Green beans
Pumpkin pie
