Disclaimer: Overall as a adult I am very happy with the way that my life has turned out to this point, but like most people if I could go back in time there is a few things that I would change about myself back in HS that I know now.
Dear High School Self,
Where do I begin? Overall you were pretty good, but like everything in life there are some changes that I would like you to make in order to make your adult self much happier.
1. Drop band during your senior year like you wanted to for you will never again pick up your sax, and fill that space with a more useful class. Don’t let the “you’ll regret it later” talk from our parents persuade you to stay in band all 4 years cause you will end up not regretting dropping band.
2. Give up your dream of playing softball in college, and stick with Track all for years in college, plus learn to the glide & spin techniques, and yes your throws will suck at first, but trust me they will improve, and it will be awesome.
3. Go get your eyes checked out by a real eye doctor, not the one at Costco. Trust me on this.
4. Don’t let your parents mess with your class schedule freshman year
5. Don’t change your college or major choice, but just for fun apply to the other schools that you wanted to just for fun, and see what happens.
6. On that subject of major choices, go ahead and give the one finger salute to your HS advisor when she lectured you about just how worthless a history major is as there is way more opportunities for a history major then she thinks. You will end up spending time in the retail business, but it will be in a highly specialized area that requires special skills, and she wouldn’t last a day in your area.
7. Learn how to save money cause you will through a dark period where you will be without a job, and yes it will take a toll on you and cause you to have some demons, but you will overcome them.
8. Parent/teacher conferences will turn into performance reviews, and they still suck and will stress you out even if you think you will get over stressing out about such things after graduation
9. Beer is nasty- stay away from it & don’t give into temptation to drink your freshman year of college
10. Get a point & shoot digital camera & take pictures every chance you get especially during senior year.
11. Take you faith seriously
12. Don’t be cocky but instead learn to be humble
13. Learn to realize that you don’t always have to be the strong one all the time-let your emotions show, and be warned that you will suffer from bouts of depression, and you will have some certain thoughts about harming yourself, but know that you will overcome this by means of self-care, and keeping your faith in God.
14. Adulting does suck, but it can also be fun
15. You will meet some incredible people both your age, and on the older side listen to them for they will have a huge influence on you more then you think they will.
16. Don’t give up the game of golf- find the time to play even if it might a just a few times, and find a way to join the ladies golf league at your church sooner rather then later.
17. This Queen don’t need a (earthly) King
18. Realize that you are indeed one bada** chick, and accept yourself for who you are, and live your life by your own rules & to the fullest. Remember Haters are gonna hate, so just let them hate.
19. Death is a part of life, and it sucks but learn to accept the fact that everyone that you love whether they are blood or not are going to die, and it will hurt. This includes animals. Enjoy every moment you can with them, and don’t take them for granted.
20. You will have to cut people out of your life that don’t go with the plan that is put forward for you- accept it and move on.
21. You will be Busting your butt working, but don’t expect anyone to notice, just go out there and do your thing quietly but know that the money will be worth it in the end.
22. See #21- but don’t let the money control you.
23. Enjoy your 20s/early 30s as that’s the best decade and a half of your life and it will go by fast
24. Even tho it was a bit lame still go to your high school reunion as you will still have some fun
Finally, Life is not a track meet it’s a marathon
Heed this advice, and your life will turn out for the better cause all you gotta do is trust the process. #YOLO
Signed,
Your Adult self
