I’m very sorry for my terrible communication while in South Africa. I wish I could blame it solely on the fact the wifi here is terrible, but that’s not really it. I am honestly just really bad at remembering to blog.
Now that there is only a month of ministry left in South Africa, let me tell you about my life here! Better late than never amirite ladies.
In South Africa, I live in a surf city called Jeffery’s Bay. Jeffery’s Bay is one of the top surfing cities in the whole world. Where I live is exactly two minutes walk from the beach. I can see the beach from the entrance to our complex.
For the first month, we lived in a big hall that was separated by a curtain and had a living room and a dining room. It was very cute and spacious and we had a really big speaker and we loved it.
Our ministry looked like 2 hours of community service (cleaning trash and playing soccer) and then 2-2 1/2 hours of helping at a holiday service group. (That means playing lots of games with teenagers.)
After debrief, we moved into bungalows. Our team is split into A and B. A is me, Melina, Savana, and Brooke. B is Avery, Elyse, Hannah, and Molly. Team A lives in a bungalow by the volleyball pit and Team B lives in a bungalow by the offices. It honestly stinks that we are separated, but it makes our time all together that much sweeter.
Our ministry is split between camps and school visits. Our first 3 ministry days back from debrief were the most exhausting days of my entire life. We were counselors for a camp of 160 or so 8th graders. We were put in charge of groups of roughly 10. We were constantly working and moving and on the go. Those days were some of the most tiring and rewarding days of the race so far. The following few days were full of us going to a nearby high school and teaching them the story of the Good Samaritan. While schools are always fun, camps are so full of energy and life.
It’s truly a dream that I get to live in Jeffery’s Bay and do ministry with primary and secondary students all day. I love this life. I love that this is the life Jesus has chosen for me. I am so ridiculous blessed!
