A week and a half ago I was in church singing along to the song “This I Believe (The Creed)” by Hillsong. As I was singing, I started to really think about the lyrics I was speaking and realized the power and truth behind the words. If you’re not familiar with The Creed, it’s basically what it says it is: the Apostle’s Creed, translated into song form by Hillsong. I actually got chills as I was reflecting on the meaning and power of The Creed at church. The words bring together the foundation of faith that has unified Christians across the world and across centuries.
The chorus goes as following:
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus
It really struck a chord with me as I don’t think we reaffirm these basic truths often enough. That I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, the resurrection of the Christ and life everlasting. There is power in the confession and declaration of these truths. Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Not only is it important to know these truths in your heart, but it is also important to confess and declare them with your mouth. You are not only declaring to yourself but also to the world that Jesus is Lord and you stand with Him.
