In all honesty, I was apprehensive about coming to India because I didn’t think the Lord was truly alive here. Because the culture is rooted so deeply in tradition and religion, I assumed there wouldn’t be a lot of change, that it was a hopeless cause. I began wishing the days away on the plane ride in, ready to get this month done. Of course, Jesus shattered all of that in no time flat when roses awaited us at the end of our 8 hour bus ride or more so when I first heard the name of Jesus uttered in the native language here. I have no idea why but it hit me hard. It’s said with such haste and desperation – like a source of life. I always felt like I knew the power in Jesus’ name until then. It took two full travel days across oceans, jet leg that would wake me up ready for the day at 4 am, and a foreign culture for me to understand the sheer magnificence of it. It took being thrown so far out of my comfort zone when my team was assigned door to door ministry and preaching for the entire month to understand it’s the only thing I can cling to for peace. It took a different child holding each one of my fingers smiling up at me to realize that it was His name that put breath in their lungs. It took women weeping in need of prayer to show me the actual, tangible need for it to be spoken. It took a man being healed from paralysis to understand that it can do anything. It took an 11 year old girl leaning up to kiss my cheek in gratitude for my prayer to truly see Jesus’ name lived out, to see that it is not just a name. It’s the most powerful prayer, the purest love.
Yesu Kristu. Jesus.
The simplest name that knows no borders.
