A few weeks ago, I took my little brother to a meeting and met up with a friend for dinner. After we were done eating, we grabbed our to-go containers to leave; I knew my little brother would be hungry after his meeting, so I went to the waitress to ask for a fork. She was busy, so I stood back and waited patiently. My friend was eager to leave, so he went up to her and asked for a fork. She handed him one, and we left. As we walked away, I said “She was busy. I didn’t want to interrupt”.
There was no response from my friend, but in my heart, I received a confident, yet convicting response: “I’m calling you to interrupt.”
Christ lived a life of interruption.
- Jesus interrupted Peter and Andrew as they were fishing, calling them to become fishers of men (Matt 4:18-20)
- He interrupted those who collected taxes and sold oxen and sheep in the temple; he overturned their tables, rebuked them and sent them out of the temple (John 2:14-16).
- His sleep was interrupted by a fierce storm on the sea; he was awoken by his disciples and calmed the storm (Matt 8:24-27).
- Jairus came to Jesus to ask for healing for his daughter. As Jesus walked to Jairus’ house, the woman with the issue of blood touched his cloak; due to her faith, she was made whole (Mark 5: 21-43)
- Lazarus “rested in peace” until Jesus raised him from the dead four days later (John 11)
I’ve never been the person to intentionally interrupt people, unless things need to change. Working as a paramedic, if another medic is leading a call, I allow them to lead until we move to the ambulance; I won’t interrupt unless something needs to be done differently.
But until that day in the restaurant, I never looked at interruption as a positive thing. Growing up, “interrupting” always had a negative connotation. But as we can see throughout scripture, many miracles happened due to interruption.
I feel God is calling us to a life of interruption, to live out His legacy; to give them something they’ve never had; to teach them something that will change their lives and the way they do things; to bring them to the Savior. As we follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit this year, I’m expecting to see great results!!
Please keep myself, my team and my squad in your prayers as we prepare to leave, stepping out in faith to do what we were called to do. Please pray for provision, as many of us still need funding. Please pray for the people we interact with throughout the year, that their hearts will be open to receive. Thank you for all your support!
