Life update: I’m doing a thing. And that thing is called the WORLD RACE. Which sounds like a mega marathon extremo survival event, but it’s not (lol praise BE).
It is in fact, an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. Leaving November 2018 (to ‘launch’ Jan 2019), I’ll go around the world with a squad of 30ish people and a backpack. Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, Botswana, Bulgaria, Serbia, Spain, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia are the nations I’ll be in! We will spend a month in each country partnering with local ministries in smaller teams (think church, anti-trafficking, school, orphanage, freedom business etc). But more than just ‘missions’, the World Race has a huge focus on genuine discipleship and community life. I’m stoked for service alongside raw and real community. Why?
God has been growing a real unease within me at the distance between my easy life in Western New Zealand and how most of our world actually lives. The injustices of cyclical poverty, human trafficking, sex slavery, oppression, limited education and corruption make me passionate for change, at any level. And I truly believe that the best antidote to injustice is Jesus Christ and the coming of his holistic kingdom. A kingdom of justice, restoration, reconciliation and grace. I’m feeling called to go, see and act in ways that restore peace and wholeness. To pursue and facilitate places where the space between heaven and earth is thin. The call in Isaiah 58 to be a “rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes” has pulled me to the World Race – I’m going to partner with and encourage local ministries in their restoration of ‘home’ and Christ rootedness in their communities. No saviour complex, just partnering with King Jesus and his Church in the light that is already springing up all over this beautiful earth.
I’m on a slightly different route called Unscripted. It differs from a normal World Race in that our day to day ministry is not fully prescribed. Through listening prayer, our own networks with ministries/missionaries and discernment we’ll plan our ministry as we go along. Unscripted requires deeper faith, more prep and trust in each other. Unscripted exists to foster this listening, missional lifestyle long after the Race. Part of my attraction to the Race is that needed dependence on God and intensity of community.
Simplicity & abandon, I’m coming for ya.
FUN FACTS
- There’s 4 humans in my immediate whanau – Dad, Mum, Jonny & me. Jonny’s not technically my twin but we pretty much act like it. Here’s us at a wedding:

- I’ve done 2 years of an Arts degree in Psychology, and have since been working as a medical receptionist.
- I run Youth Ministry at my church The Well. Full time work + ‘youth pastor’ + night classes in Te Reo Maori = busy busy, but it’s worth it.
- After the Race I’ll go back to uni to pursue development studies or investigative journalism. I’m stoked for the time I’ll have on the Race experiencing many different ministries, cultures and ways of life as I discern and decide what my life and career will look like next.
- I’ll be in the USA a few months before and after the actual 11 month Race, so I’ll be out of NZ for more than a year. Eeeeeeesh. Be still my heart.
Thanks for having a read, stay tuned for more blogs. Ps – I love crafting words and am excited by the platform of a blog again! So bear with me as some of these pre launch blogs will have little to do with the Race. Which I think is cool, as God is always doing something in us in the here & now and never limits Himself to one program/organisation.
GRACE & PEACE
