Cambodia. I know I said Vietnam is at the top at the list, it is, but Cambodia (along with Thailand) have been on my bucket list for FOREVER. I’ve always felt some type of call to these places. The culture is so vibrant and I AM SO EXCITED TO SPEND MONTH 5 AND THE MONTH OF DECEMBER HERE. Christmas in Cambodia, anyone? (I claim the rights to that title, it sounds like a great Hallmark movie in my honest opinion)

CAMBODIA

Cambodia boasts the famous Angkor Wat, a Hindu temple that later became a Buddhist monastery. Hidden for centuries under dense jungle, today Angkor Wat is one of most photographed places in the world.

Cambodia itself is struggling to heal from one of the worst genocides in modern history.

In the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge killed over 1.5 million men, women, and children. Faced with inconceivable poverty and desperation, Cambodia became a source, transit point, and destination for human trafficking.

The people of Cambodia are hungry for hope and healing.

CULTURE!

While the traditional greeting is a slight bow with palms pressed together in front of one’s body, shaking hands is widely practiced as well.

Visitors should not point their feet at someone or touch a Khmer person on the head.

Public displays of anger, irritation, or impatience should be avoided. Khmer culture places great importance on politeness and respect.

In traditional homes, Khmer will sit on floor mats when eating; men sit with their legs crossed, and women sit with legs tucked to one side.
