Note: Before heading to China, the Lord gave me a vision of teaching an English course in a cafe and I was excited for how it would work out.

When we arrived at our first city, it was our Sabbath. Now, there are two things I always do on our Sabbath – first, is to have a quiet time with the Lord (reading my bible and journaling) and second, finding a good cup of coffee (no instant coffee). So I set out to find a local café, unaware of what God had planned. We came across the cutest café and decided to spend some time there.
Later in the day, a person arrived who spoke very good English. We struck up a conversation and the café gave us some watermelon juice and a piece of cheesecake. I really enjoyed the conversation, however, it was cut short since the person had to leave early.

Two days later, we had the opportunity to return to the café. Fortunately, the same person was there and we were able to talk again. We found out, the person liked photography, had been to America and was a believer. Unfortunately, no other members of their family were saved. The person had learned about God on their own and was excited to show us their bible app. We talked about how God had changed our lives and a friendship quickly developed. We came back every day, until we left the city, to connect with this person that God had brought into our lives.

Also, our new friend told us about the café. Apparently, the café had only been opened for a short time, although the owner had been making coffee for years. He was very passionate about establishing his own business and had recently been able to do so. Our theme for the month was “Creative Engagement” and as I heard about the owner’s story, God put it on my heart to support him and his new venture. It was at that moment, that God reminded me of the idea of teaching English in the Café.

We approached the owner about holding English classes in his café. Our new friend acted as our interpreter. We told the owner that the classes would be free. However, it would bring people to his Café and they would be able to purchase his amazing coffee! When he heard the idea, he had the biggest smile!

Since my team would be leaving the next day, I introduced the team that was staying in the city to the owner. I did not know that day I walked into the cafe that the Lord would open a door for amazing ministry opportunity and great friendship. It also opened the door for our friend to tell their family members about Jesus.

It was hard to leave and move onto the next city. Not only was it hard to say goodbye to our new friend, it was really hard for me not to be a part of teaching English at the café since I had really wanted to be a part of it. I had to let go of this dream to allow the Lord to do other things in my life. I did get to teach English just not the way I thought it would be. I will tell you how in my next blog. His way is always better than we can imagine.
