In Chimal (really a lot of other places around here too) there are panaderia stands and small tiendas everywhere. I decided early in the month that I was going to be intentional about stopping at the same places each day and learning the names of the people who worked there.
There was one panaderia where I got the same flaky pastry with strawberry filling every day on the way home from ministry (so good!)
The first day when I asked his name, he looked really confused, like ‘why would you ask me such a thing?’ But he answered with a timid, “Jose.” We thanked him and went on our way.
The next day when I REMEMBERED his name and thanked him for the pastry he still looked confused but with a hint of surprise that I took the time to retain his name.
This continued day by day and Jose’s reactions softened over the month.
On the day we were leaving Chimal I went on a walk 100% on a mission to go buy one more pastry from Jose. I had also written him a note with 3 verses on it. I prayed over the verses that the Lord would speak to him through them and that it would be life changing.
When we got to the stand he didn’t have any of my regular snack (super bummed) but I bought something else, handed him the note and told him it was my last day.
Let me tell you, when I handed him that note… the pure JOY that spread across his face as his smile grew made all the weird looks earlier in the month totally worth it! I didn’t stay to see his reaction to the verses or anything but I am sure they had an impact (I mean it’s the living and active word of God).
Our entire interaction over the month was probably 10 minutes (if that) but I pray that it had eternal impact in the life of Jose. I know our interactions had an impact on me!
This is just a small example but I think it’s important to remember that relationships take time and intentionality. If I’d given up on Jose after the first awkward reaction I wouldn’t’ve experienced the joy of earning that final smile OVER TIME.
Don’t give up on people. God didn’t give up on you!
Dad, I’m fine (:
