What in the world does this phrase mean?
Guard your heart.
Everyone is asking.
When typing the word ‘guard’ into google, it is the 3rd thing to pop up. Meaning it is frequently searched.
- “Guardians of the galaxy“
- ”Guardian“
- ”Guard your heart”
Almost all girls and guys are told to do this starting at a very young age.
Proverbs 4:23
”Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
But how do you actually do that?
I was having this conversation with God recently.
I was explaining to Him how I’m not on the market for dating anymore. The next guy I date, I want him to be my husband. Lofty but very popular request for most women. Practical? Possible? I don’t know. But I do know that God is big and mighty and sovereign and if anyone can grant that request, it’s Him.
So my question for God was, how do I take ownership of guarding my heart while I wait for my husband?
How do I not fall head-over-heels for the next Joe Shmoe that says he likes me?
This is what He said:
“Learn how to serve, honor, respect and partner with a man while being married to Me. Every attribute you like in this other man, come home to Me and tell Me how ______ reminded you of Me today because he had _____ characteristic of Mine. You’re not dating him; you work with him. You are married to Me. You are loyal to Me. You come home to Me. The only reason you find him attractive is because you see Me, your perfect Lover, in him. So come and tell me about it. I’ll show you even more of the reasons you love me and are married to me.“
It doesn’t completely solve the world‘s mystery of “how do I guard my heart?”.
It‘s not a cookie-cutter formula.
But the Lord is so good at guarding our hearts for us and desires to teach us how to partner with Him in that way.
I asked the Lord and this is what He told ME.
You have to ask Him and see what He has to tell you.
Thanks God for answering when we ask you how to guard our hearts and for guarding them when we fail to.
