“Are you Catholic?”

The question came from one of the students in a class I was helping teach.

“No, I’m not,” I responded, “I’m a believer in Jesus”.

“How is that different?” another student asked.

At that moment I realized I had the freedom to answer this question, so I did. We’re not allowed to talk about Jesus in class but a student had asked and I doubt that in Thailand answering it in class is material for God’s Not Dead 3.

“Catholics believe that they have to work for their salvation. I believe that Jesus paid for my sins by dying on the cross and all I have to do is to accept that.” (Was the equivalent of my response)

“Let me give examples.” (From the teacher I was working with) “Catholics do ceremonies and rituals and Christians do good works. Am I right?” (Looking at me)

I said that Catholics do good works, like rituals and ceremonies, to earn salvation. Christians believe that Jesus died to pay for their salvation and all they have to do is to accept that.

It was a short interaction and I don’t know if they fully understood what I was saying, maybe someday God will bring someone else into their lives that will be able to fill in the gaps
