Being gone on the race is an exhausting and tough journey, but its exceptionally difficult when you’re missing a holiday. My Thanksgiving is always spent with family, sometimes even my entire extended family of 30 people, so it was weird this year knowing that I wouldnt be around for holidays with my people.
We were fortunate enough that we were given access to the kitchen and that we have some amazing cooks on the squad. Four girls cooked a fantastic thanksgiving meal for 30 people in just six hours (post ministry too). It was great to be surrounded by so many wonderful people who made me feel loved and like I was with family.
We had dinner together, a song and dance number, some jazz performed, and a whole lot of laughs. And like most families who have the traditional football tournament, we had a tournament for ourselves.
My squad leader, Audrey, blessed my team with the amazing idea to hold a sock wrestling tournament. If you are unfamiliar with sock wrestling, the concept goes: You and your opponent both wear socks. The objective is to remove your opponents socks before they remove yours. There were seven of us who participated in the tournament, having drawn names ahead of time.
No one was seriously injured in the participation of sock wrestling, just some bruises and one chipped tooth. A big shout out to Marah for being the sock champion. She fought hard and fought fair, truly deserving of the title.
Overall, missing thanksgiving was hard, but being surrounded with my team and squad made it worth it. I still felt surrounded by family, I still stuffed my face with food, and I still found a fun game to participate in.
God is good and blesses us in the smallest of ways (like sock wrestling and ham).
