Here are some details on ministry in Lesotho. We were assigned to help Life Ministries, the Lesotho section of Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru), at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). We were all very excited to be working with students our age, and I was happy to do something in which I had prior experience (I was a leader for Cru on my campus).

The first week was very slow. Our main goals were to facilitate the weekly Prime Time meetings, which had worship, a message and discussion, and time to get to know each other. There were some other events that we helped with, but the rest of the time was flexible. Our other goals were to help lead worship at church (Kendra, Hunter, and Casey) and to teach Sunday school (Audreay, Shea, and me).

With all this flexibility and undefined time, we all came to realize that we need more initiative. The first week, we spent a lot of time reading, playing games, or watching movies. Although it was nice to relax after a crazy month in Swaziland, we weren’t investing in what we came here to do: college ministry. We went on campus for an hour or two several times, but we could have done more.

The second week was much more interesting and a turning point. Our ministry started to get more involved. Melusi and Mudu, two Campus Crusade staff from Swaziland, came to coach us on evangelizing and showed us some tools for sharing the gospel and discipling. We went on campus and tried different ways of meeting students, which led to some being led to Christ and others coming to ministry events. We also were able to get to know the student leaders. The three guys, Phole, Tumelo, and Slam were so much fun, and we hung out with them a lot. On the second weekend, we had a braai (barbecue) with the ministry students, along with some new people we had invited. It was a lot of a fun and a great chance to grow our circles.

The next two weeks, we continued to spend time with the students. Audrey, Shea, and Kendra held a Bible study with some of the girls in the ministry, both the student leaders and new friends. We also met two students in the city and were able to have a bible study with them.

The third weekend, we had a worship night at the church. Our team’s squad leader, Jace (who is awesome, by the way), joined our team for the next week (he had been with several other teams before that). The last week went by incredibly fast. I felt so at home there, especially with the college environment, so it was difficult to realize that I would be leaving it all so soon.

I really enjoyed this month, and I pray that our impact would be lasting. Although we weren’t very responsible to first week, we learned a lot and were able to improve. The students were great, our host family was amazing, and I am excited for how God is working in Lesotho.
