It’s 12:37am. I’m sitting in a big, empty airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Katherine is sleeping at my feet, and my butt hurts from sitting in this chair so long.
In 7 hours we will be on a flight to Haiti—our first country to do ministry in on the World Race! But for now, I’m just sitting in an airport. Just like I did all day yesterday, and just like what I’ll do on this long, sleepless night as well.
(Now please don’t mistake this for complaining, because these are all simply observations that play a bigger role in what you’ll see below)
You see, we have been thinking and praying for this moment for a long time. God has blessed us immensely over the past few years, and we can’t (but totally can!) believe we’ve made it this far. But honestly, an 11-hour layover in Florida wasn’t what I envisioned as my first stop on the World Race. Somehow, in my brain I pictured immediately teaching school children in Africa, preaching in Cambodian communities, and building churches in the Dominican. That’d be incredible! And who knows, that stuff may very well happen this year…
But I think God is reminding me to slow down. To stop and remember that there’s always a journey to get where you’re going, and it’s not always exceptionally thrilling. Life isn’t just a snapshot. There’s a lot of in between. Plenty of time for growing pains, lessons of patience, and learning that God is in the waiting, just as much as He’s in “the thing” (whatever that thing may be). Would I rather have just flown straight from my house to Haiti? Probably. But the training we got at World Race Launch, and the reflection time I am having now is showing me that maybe the time in between isn’t so bad.Sometimes, to get to the monumental moments in our faith, God puts us on the 11-hour layovers to stop and reflect on what we are doing, and why we are doing it.
God has done an amazing work in my life! Despite all of the times I have turned my back on Him, chosen to make myself happy instead of making Him happy, He still loves me. And He commands us to go and proclaim that love! Not just to Americans, but to Haitians, Jamaicans, Africans, Indians, TO ALL PEOPLE—
GOD’S LOVE HAS NO BORDERS
So as Katherine and I go this year to declare God’s glory among the nations, we are expecting some layovers. Not just the normal layovers to get from country to country, but the spiritual ones as well. We are going to be in countries where they expect us to do ministry that may include mundane tasks that we see as boring and uncomfortable. In those moments, instead of getting frustrated and wanting to do something else, my hope and prayer is that we take time to appreciate what God is doing in the small things. In the waiting.
The layovers, however long or uncomfortable they may be, are what God uses to eventually get us to the destination.

We thank all of you for your continued love and support. Prayers are greatly appreciated as we will be in Haiti later today. Please be praying that we slow down and take time to saturate ourselves in the Word of God and live a lifestyle that is sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
