These past few months I’ve been studying the lives and character of Saul, David, and Solomon. In David and Solomon I started to notice a pattern.
David was following the Lord and so the Lord promised David that He would bless his family, especially his son, and continue their reign for forever. When David messed up with Bathsheba, the consequence was that the baby died. David’s promise was still carried out through Solomon though. So Solomon starts out following the Lord, is super wise, super rich. The Lord fulfills his promise to allow David’s son to build the temple of the Lord. However, when Solomon gets caught up in worshipping the gods of his 1,000 women in his house, the Lord tells Solomon that his son will lose the kingdom.
The Lord only allows Solomon to stay king for as long as he does because He wanted to honor His promise to David. Isn’t it interesting how the children always reap what their father’s sow? Blessings or curses, it all gets passed on to future generations.
That got me thinking about my own family. As crazy, hodgepodge, and sometimes strange my family is… I just really really love them. We support each other, spend time with each other, laugh together. What a blessing they are! Look how cute they are!
Much of that blessing is due to all the love and effort my parents have sowed into our family.I made a whole list of the ways my parents have been an example of blessing to me, and since it was just Mother’s day I wanted to honor my momma by sharing just what an incredible woman she is!
10 Things My Momma Taught Me:
1. My mother sowed growing a relationship with the Lord into me. She spends every morning reading the Bible and praying – It’s a norm about her that I always appreciated and have now caught on to.
2. She sowed listening ears that always give other the benefit of the doubt. I assume the best in people because she always had something kind to say about someone I was complaining about.
3. She sowed an example of teaching herself new skills by trying again and again. Whether she is learning how to knit, sew, or make cards she looks for a way to make something practical that gives her a creative outlet but blesses other people at the same time.
4. She sowed a respect and care for her parents and elders that make me more aware of how to do the same for her and my elders now and as we all get older.
5. She sowed a strong work ethic into my life, not so that I didn’t have to work, but so that I could see a healthy example of how to care for a family’s needs and still bless them.
6. She sowed a persevering attitude into me. Whenever sports or school got hard and I wanted to quit, she never let me. I always thought it was so annoying, but now I understand how much you learn about yourself and the world when you don’t quit when it’s hard.
7. She sowed financial wisdom into my life that allowed me to go to a good college, travel the world, and still care for my needs.
8. She sowed using her gifts in cooking and baking simple, delicious meals to comfort grieving families with the best foods in life. No dietary or time restriction has ever scared her off.
9. She sowed how to pursue someone that isn’t a Christian or is discouraged in gentle grace and love. She actively seeks out family members and friends looking for ways to encourage them and love them like Jesus.
10. She sowed motherhood, care, and all those things that not only taught me how to care for children but make me excited to be a mother like her someday.
I could go on and on about her, but she probably wouldn‘t like that because she’s a humble person and all. Needless to say, she’s pretty incredible!
Love ya Mom! See ya soon!
