Perhaps the biggest obstacle people have with yoga comes down to the fact that everyone has differing ways of thinking about it. There’s people who consider it wholly religious and those that consider it secular, there’s people who use it for meditations and those who do it for exercise, and probably many other ways of considering it.

I know that there is a lot in the world teaching us that morality isn’t important, and I want to veer away from this, because in my point of view, this is not a moral issue.

I know people will argue that nothing like yoga is in the Bible – and that we need to be wary because it has roots in hinduism. Yes. I understand, but I don’t even want to really fight that argument either.
Here is a source that is (mostly) opposed to yoga – and has some very legitimate points:

I thought that some of you might want that, since you might have your own reservations and might want to know what some other believers might think about it.

HONESTLY: what I want to talk about is kinda skewed away from all the for or against yoga debate.

I want to share something my friend Bex said to me and how that really encouraged me to wrestle with something I struggle with in a different way.

………

Background info.

This is a judgement free zone. I believe that if someone is following the Lord, then if they are doing anything that He desires them to walk away from, then He will confirm that to them.

I believe that believers have every right and need to check their heart and conscious and live from that place. so…

In saying all that, I have done yoga with my Korean co-teachers and a few of my friends before and have thoroughly enjoyed it for it’s physical properties and the way that it stretched and helped my body work out when it was not always easy to do it otherwise.

I personally see the physical side of yoga as beneficial and working with ones body in crazy inventive ways for it’s flexibility and overall health and strengthening.

I believe that if it is accepted with gratitude and used properly that ones own movement of ones body cannot be and should not be denied. I also believe that taking every thought captive and inviting the Lord into anything is useful whatever we are doing. It doesn’t specifically have to be during “yoga” and why not do it when you’re exercising? Ok, I didn’t want to get into a debate.

Be still and know He’s God!

……….

I was talking with my friend Bex and she shared with me about how when you are working out and your instructor comes alongside and pushes you to go further, or corrects your posture – how that is such a welcome thing!

About how that allows you to best learn, become better, and strengthen your process/practice and muscles for best learning and health so that you don’t continue in a wrong or physically harmful way.

She then brought up this question, “If that is so helpful and so needed and welcome, why are we so angry or resistant to allow people into correcting our heart or attitude postures?”

WOW.

That stopped me.

Why is it so hard to allow people to speak into those places?

Why is it so painful and wounding?

Why do I so easily desire to reject instead of accept that kind of correction?

…For sure, this is a good question to think on.

So I’m inviting you into that question.

What do you think?

Have you thought about this before?

How easy is it for you to allow people to give you feedback about your attitude or where your heart seems to be?

Do you welcome it? Or do you find yourself rejecting and avoiding it?

Do you think you need it?
