Dreamer

“I must accept that I am a dreamer. That kind of dreamers people would use the word hopeless for. That kind of dreamer who dreams bigger than their own existence. That kind of dreamer who’s naive enough to dream. And if you’re one like me,I hope you have the courage to embrace this word dreamer so whenever you accomplish your dreams, the world can know your dreams were worth it, all this time.”
This past week, one of my leaders, Emily, had a session with us all about dreams. The first thought I had in my mind was,”Yeah, no, I hardly ever dream.” Boy was I wrong about that. As soon as I let those words come out of my mouth, I immediately realized that that isn’t even true. We as people dream alllll the time. Countless dreams go past our heads almost everyday. Usually if I have a dream come up into my head, I just shew it away, because I think it isn’t doable or it sounds too weird or silly. Let me also add, that I always came to the conclusion that dreams are just for kids and their very imaginative minds. But, that’s not how dreams work. Anyone can have them, no matter how old or young you may be.
Emily gave us a few prompts to take 5 minutes each on and write about them. One of the prompts was “What are some dreams that came true in the last year?”. Probably the hardest prompt out of them all. I literally could not think of one for a whole minute, but as my ideas were flowing, my brain seem to finally work. I written down things like me being able to go out and do this mission trip, graduating from high school and even simply working at an ice cream shop and thrift store. With all the little and big dreams that came true this year, I just noticed how much God is very creative. He is the creator of the entire universe, if that isn’t creative, I don’t know what is. Another prompt was “What are some dreams that you have for the future?”. Now, this was the easiest for me to answer. I wrote down dreams like owning a husky dog, being married, owning an apartment in the city somewhere, having a steady job and quite possibly traveling across the whole United States. Sounds pretty crazy right?? But to me, these are all the things I can accomplish in my life, and all I really need is a heart for passion. As we did these dream exercises and really dug into what we dream of, I started to grasp what I value the most. Before we did the dream session, we did a session on our values as a person and Emily wrote out this really awesome and long list of tons of values that people tend to choose. She told us to narrow it down and choose 6 and then go even further and narrow it down to 3 values. I had a really tough time deciding at first, because there were so many values that I knew were really great values, but to choose the top 3 that spoke the most to me and ended up being the final answers, was so hard. I ended up narrowing it down to the heart of things and decided that harmony, passion and authenticity were what it boiled down to. Within all my dreams and things I live out on an everyday basis, these 3 values matter the most to me at the end of the day. It’s really funny, because before this session, I had absolutely no idea what I truly value in myself and others around me. People would ask once in a while what I really believe and it was always so hard to decide or just plain answer them, but now that I have a better picture on how I work and how I want people to see me, I feel more in tune to self awareness. The Lord created us all uniquely and he gave each of us so many crazy creative things in our life. Whether that be dreams or values, the Lord works in amazing ways. If it wasn’t for me chasing this dream of mission work, then I have no idea what I would be doing. He also places dreams in our souls so we can learn to grow and seek new things that may be uncomfortable to us at first, but in the end we come to a realization that God works in mysterious ways and if we simply ask Him to place dreams in our life or ask him to provide for us, he will listen. Asking God for things like dreams and values may not always be an answer that comes quickly within a few minutes or days. God has a perfect timing for these things and sometimes our dreams may take 10 years to actually achieve, but it’s all worth it in the end when we put our trust in the Lord. God is so amazingly beautiful in just so many ways. He wants us to chase our dreams and really live out our true values.
