This past month we spent a lot of time playing sport—mainly football and ultimate Frisbee. Every afternoon we attempted to play sports. On Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays we played ultimate Frisbee and the rest of the week was football. Some days we played football with younger kids, 8-12 years, other days we played with older kids, 13+. Some days it was more practice, other days was more competitive.
One Sunday afternoon, we were heading to the football field to play against some Nepalese. On our way to the football field, it started to rain. By the time we reached the field it was lightning and thundering and pouring. Since it was lightning out our coach told us to stay inside until the storm was over. As soon as the lightning passed we reluctantly headed out to the field. Mind you, the lightning was gone, but it was still raining hard. We look out onto the field and wonder whether we are playing football or water polo. A least a quarter of the field was under 5-6 inches of water. So we took off our shoes, because who wants stinky wet shoes, and ran out barefoot onto the field.
The game began, the Nepalese versus the Malays and Americans. The Nepalese had cleats on, but were still sliding all over the field. One minute you could be dribbling the ball and the next is would stop dead on top of a puddle of water. We continued playing in the rain for an hour until it was time for the Nepalese to leave. The final score was 3-2 in their favor. It was fun playing a game of football in the rain.
This wasn’t the only time we played in the rain. It seems to rain almost every day in Ipoh. I enjoyed playing sports and building relationships with the players.
