Love’s on the Way – Sebastian Kole
I absolutely love this song and what it signifies. It resonated with me and left me asking how am I trying to change this world? I especially love the words that follow:
Maybe I’m numb to the news of violence
I just send another prayer
Maybe we’re used to this or clueless
Or is it nobody cares?
Cause every other day, it’s another killing
And our children have to pay
We act like if we ignore it,
Maybe it’ll go away
No I’m not a superhero
I just want to save the day
I can’t pretend everything’s okay
Can’t pretend everything’s okay
Love called and asked about us
Said she’d wondered where we’d gone
She’s been lonely without us
She wants us to come back home
And don’t you miss the way it used to be for you and me?
Well, won’t you please answer her call with me and say?
Love is on the way
How many times do we see pain and destruction on the news, in the paper, another shared story on Facebook and do nothing. Or maybe we’ll give it a like and think about it for 5 minutes and move on with our day. I’m guilty of this too. I have lived my comfortable life in a safe town and have never experienced true brokenness and maybe I still haven’t. But I have seen a glimpse of it. I’ve seen it in Albania when two little girls had to beg for food and money so their father would not be angry with them. I saw it in Romania when people felt lost but didn’t know why. I saw it in Greece when a father was begging for shoes for his son for three months. Or when a family of 7 needed to share a fourth of a tent with 3 other families. Or when a riot broke out and I saw hundreds of people run away and sleep outside of camp because they felt unsafe. And now I see it in Malaysia. I see children come from broken homes where they may not be provided for where their future is often decided for them because of their status.
This world is filled with brokenness. It’s there. We can see it. We just have to take the time to look. But should we just look? No, we look and then we act.
You might think that after what I have experienced these last 4 months would be disheartening and discouraging, but I would say it has had the opposite effect because I have been working with people who are trying to make a change and this has brought me hope. They saw a need and tried to fill it. I saw it when a man gave money to those two girls. I saw it when one man created an organization focused on providing for people’s physical and spiritual needs in Romania. I saw it when volunteers spent countless hours making sure a family didn’t have to sleep outside in the cold in Greece. And I see it now in Malaysia as I work in a school started by a pastor and his wife in hopes of changing the lives of children through education.
These people saw a need and chose to fill it. They did not wait for a ‘divine calling’ because the need itself was the call. These people chose action over waiting. These people and their determination to make a difference in this world have inspired me. They have a passion for people and God’s creation. They believe people are worth saving because God felt the same way. He felt that we were worth dying for. And that my friends should be reason enough to do something.
So what will you do? How will you answer love’s call?
