I looked down at the big brown eyes staring up at me with that giant smile sitting under her nose. Her shirt said “lovely” and I couldn’t think of a better word to describe her. She broke eye contact and started tugging me towards where clothes were being handed out. I reached for a sweater at the same time as like 4 other people. Sadly, I did not win that fight for the sweater. I was crushed. My heart broke and tears were about ready to stream down my face. She looked up at me though with that big smile and wrapped her arms around me. I don’t know how it happened but in the same moment my heart was broken and filled with so much love for this child. I smiled up at the Lord because He calls her lovely and because she is His daughter too. Although I may never see her on this earth again, I know I’ll see her in Heaven because I stood next to her as she prayed the prayer asking for the Lord to come into her heart.
I only spent a small amount of time in that gypsy village but I know I can say that I hope that I never grow numb to the reality of the heartbreak in the world.
