Greetings from Battambang! Life is so sweet (and sweaty) on this side of the world. My squad is blessed to have great living arrangements (running water…real toilets…electricity…the whole sha-bang!) While air conditioning is basically nonexistent over here, we’re slowly adjusting to the 90% humidity. Fans are a lifesaver!
Since arriving four days ago, we’ve been immersed in the Cambodian lifestyle. We ride our bikes everywhere, and I finally know how to navigate crazy intersections without the fear of colliding with a tuk-tuk (sidewalks aren’t a thing here…nor are stop lights.) I’m now familiar with the local markets, and I visit them frequently to buy a pineapple for 25 cents or delicious lemon tea. I’m definitely used to Cambodian prices…I bought a lunch for $3.25 the other day and I hated how expensive it was (we live off $4 a day for food…the cost of living so low here). There have been several instances when I definitely haven’t felt like I’m in the 21st century. Hand washing laundry on the roof (hand washing is way harder then it seems, guys), sweeping dirt out of the door into the street , and no wifi and very limited technology are just a couple examples. While living in a third world country is definitely different, it feels so right. Living simply puts life into perspective and helps you appreciate what really matters. This place is filled with poverty, but in the midst of the darkness I have found some of the most joyful people, the most beautiful smiles, and the most genuine hearts.
Yesterday we taught Sunday school and had orientation at New Hope School, where we’ll be six days a week for the next two months. We will get to work alongside the Cambodian teachers and help them teach English and other subjects. I’ve already fallen in love with the students, and I can’t wait to find out who will be in my classroom (I’m pretty sure they will be 10 and 11 year olds). I know these next couple months will be stretching, but I’m so excited to invest in these kids and see how God will work in our lives.
More pictures and updates are coming! Much love.
