A small concrete room, a tin roof up above our heads, and a set of bunk beds. Our packs lined against the walls. Nine months worth of wardrobe consumes the room. Living in small quarters, but you bet the laughs take up the most space in the room. An open window with a curtain. With every light breeze the curtain lifts giving us a glimpse of the Tegucigalpa mountain range. The clouds lay low as the peaks pierce through. It is as if we are closer to heaven then we thought. Light giggles in the distances as the kids prepare for the school day. We are greeted on the steps, “buenos dias” the little ones say as we head out for our ministry. We pile into a white mini van. Clunk-clunk as we head down the bumpy road. Whizzing through the curvy roads we head straight for the colorful houses that hug each other in the distance. We pull up to a crooked wooden gate that surrounds a small home. An open living space. In the door way stands an older lady with a joyous glow to her. Past her I see a mother holding a disabled child and a little boy hiding behind her side. There is another boy that looked to be sick laying on the couch. With no men to be found in the household. I could tell how much those women cared for their children. Feeling a bit anxious my team and I ask to pray over their family. Peace and prosperity we asked of God. Feeling incapable to do such a prayer I encounter the Holy Spirit. He was ever so present in their home. A broken home. A place that held no light. I saw how little they had, yet their joy was so evident. I thought to myself, “why am I not that joyful or trustworthy of Christ?” Ashamed of this thought, God reminded me that I am doing His work. It is not for me to gain, but for Him. He said, “I am an image bearer of Him.” If I am in Christ then the Holy Spirit dwells in me. The calling is to tell of His great love not of mine.
I learned a lot from that little family that day. Faith in Christ is not to be compared. We are all called to love and to lead others into the Fathers arms. Whether we feel capable of such a task or not. And in those moments of uncertainty God will meet us where we are at. He wants nothing more than us to encounter Him. He is our guide and most importantly He is the one who equips us. So when you feel unable, remember how far you already have come. God can do incredible works through you if you simply let go and let God.
